hi there, weve had our budgie for two and a half weeks now, when we got him he had a small crack in his beak, now its got more whiter and visible. he is eating fine and it doesnt seem like it causing him any pain, could this be causing him a problem? and should we get it checked out? or is it nothing to worry about, will it heal by itself?

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting that great question!
Does your little budgie's beak look cracked, or is it just peeling? In peeling, the top layers of the beak sort of take on a flakey appearance whereas a crack would actually look kind of like a crack would in concrete. Did I make that distinction clear? :S
Budgies have blood vessels in their beaks, so if it is in fact cracked, you would want to get it checked out by an avian veteriarian. It's better to treat a cracked beak early than to wait until it potentially causes a beak deformity.
Would you be able to post a picture of your little sweetie?

can you tell me how to post a pic? this is the same as the snake forum i use and i still cant figure it out
the beak has white edges to it, i can get a very good pic of it because of the shine, it isnt very noticeable!!

Sounds great! I'd love to see pictures of your budgie anyway, even it if doesn't really show the beak crack that well. However, if you are able to get one with the crack, I would love to see it too and perhaps be able to offer you some advice about whether or not you should be concerned. :p
Sounds like an interesting case!
I don't know what to say though, I'm glad you do Budgiekin!
I hope he's alright.

here you go, cnt see the crack tho but you might be able to see the white around his beak
Could it be mites at all, Budgiekin?

It doesn't look like mites as far as I can tell; that would resemble a honeycomb-shaped crusty material on your budgie's beak and that's not what it sounds like or looks like.
The whitish colour around the periphery of his beak looks like a normal beak from what I can tell from the photo.
Keep in mind that beaks tend not to be completely smooth all the time and much like our skin peels and regenerates (even though we don't always see that happening), a budgie's beak is sort of like skin in that it is also regenerating itself over time too.
As far as the "crack" goes, I would certainly keep an eye on it and if you notice it deepening or getting larger/longer, then I would bring your little munchkin to an avian vet to get it looked at. Also, if your budgie doesn't eat as much as he normally does, that might be a sign that his beak is causing him difficulties.
He sure is a real sweetie! Very cute indeed! I love his plastic budgie buddy friend.

Yeah, I really love her colouring. My hubby chose her for me. At the time, we didn't know she was a "she" either so her name was originally Skye since that seemed to be a unisex name.
Budgies come in all kinds of fascinating colours, don't they?
