View Full Version : My Breeding...

It seems over the last few months that Spring is in the air...well for the southern hemisphere anyway and that Breeding for some is all what is on there budgies mind. I thought after a discussion in club that I would discuss the best requirements for setting up a breeding cage.

The breeding cage should be purpose build or bought . I use a timber breeding cage that is 600 long x 450 high by 350 depth (measurements in metric millimeters) so thats 24 inches x 18inches x 14 inches.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/NewImage.jpg
In this picture you can see the cage with the nest box on the inside. I have change the concept to hang the nest box on the outside.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/DSCN5528.jpg
Nest box on the outside.

The larger the breeding cage the better. I would not go under this size.

The same with the nest box.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/DSCN0039.jpg
This was the last size I made measuring 250mm high x 210mm wide x 153mm deep.

I have changed this to now 250mm (10") High x 215mm (81/2") deep x 210mm (81/4") wide .
Similar to the breeding cage, budgies like a large nest box.

The perches are now different sizes. I use a 12mm and an 18mm round hard wood dowl. but will be changing all to 12mm round dowl and an 19 mm square perch for the hen. The difference in sizes are to excersize the feet of the bird. 2 successful clutches can take over 100 days minimum so the birds are cramped up in the breeding cage for sometime.

Breeding cages can be "Stacked"
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/DSCN5511.jpg
I currently run 9 breeding cages, a nursery and a full flight.

The breeding cage has seed soaked in breeding aid (http://www.vetafarm.com.au/show_product.asp?category_id=24&item_number=0309).
Water that is replace everyday.
I use a water management system that involve vitamins, probotic, calcium additives and plain water.
Medication and worming is also administered via the management.

In addition I have a cuttlefish, a finger draw with minerals, an Iodine and charcoal bell.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Budgies006.jpg

The hen is placed in the cage for 3 days before introducing the cock.

Bonding is a nesacary factor to breeding. I have had to split up pairs because they haven't got along.

I supply every morning to the breeding pair a mixture of Hulled oats, carrots and protien.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Budgies005.jpg
As the eggs hatch I will increase the level of Protien for the parents to feed the chicks.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Budgerigars007.jpg
This mixture is removed every night and the remainder is feed to the birds in the flight.

When the chicks get to 24 days old.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/DSCN5520.jpg
I will start to give them a 3 inch piece of Millet in the nest to help them start to feed themselves.

From 28 days on wards the chicks will start to come out of the nest.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/DSCN5529.jpg

This is the time I make sure there is plenty of seed, millet, soft food and vegitables for the chicks.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Budgies002.jpg
I use celery, carrots, corn, snow pea sprouts and mung bean sprouts in the dishes for the chicks. The mix is given in the morning and removed in the afternoon in winter or lunch time in summer. The remainder is thrown away. It is not safe for the birds in the flight.

The chicks are weighed weekly to see if they are sustaining their weight. At 42 days old and all going well they are moved from the breeding cage.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/DSCN5557.jpg

To the nursery.
The nursery is a dual cage or stock cage that is 1200mm long 450mm high x 350mm deep.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Stock_cage_2.jpg
It is set up the same as the breeding cage less the nest box. The capability of puting a devider in to make two cages is to make it easy to weigh and check the chicks for progress every week for a month.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Stock_cage_1.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/budgie09014.jpg
The chicks are given a high level of protein and vegitables every day.

At the age of 3 months the chicks start to moult. Moulting Aid (http://www.vetafarm.com.au/show_product.asp?category_id=24&item_number=0418) can be given and the chick can be observed.
After the moult has finished the chick can be transfered to the flight.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Budgerigars014.jpg

The chicks are still feed with vegitables and are closely monitored.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Budgerigars008.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/Budgerigars015.jpg

I keep all recordes of the condition of the eggs through to the chicks in the flight on two programes.
Bird Tracker (http://www.cabinsoftware.biz/) and The Budgerigar Program (http://www.cabinsoftware.biz/)

Be prepared for the worst and you will do well. read up on the proceedure. I recommend the Master Breeder (http://www.tuxford.dabsol.co.uk/masterbreeder/front.htm) for information on Breeding. Join a club and get information from the ones that are experienced in breeding.

Wow Apollo,

That was really informative and interesting. Thank you for sharing the steps of breeding Budgies and what all is involved. The photos were very special, too. I can see that you are an extra busy person with a lot to do. I can't imagine the joy you feel every time you have an egg hatch and another beautiful baby Budgie appears. Do you hand feed your babies? That would take such a long time but it would be such a "PLUS" for your customers. Do you sell your Budgies to stores or to people personally?

What a blessing this has been - to be able to share in what you are doing. I admire you for all of the hard work and I'm sure that it is very rewarding in the end. :D

Thank you donna,
I don't hand feed unless necassary. I have had to do some for a young hen that is inexperienced but luckily she got the idea and successfully raised her chicks.

It is a great feeling to have chicks do well and see them from the egg to the flight.

Here is some of my current chicks.

Aw.. Lovely!
The photos were very cute! But, on one of the photos where there are four chicks and one egg, is the egg written-on? [it looks like it has a number 5 on it] . Sorry, I just wasn't sure! Are they your budgies?

But anyway, that was pretty helful, although I don't intend on breeding-yet.

A lot of breeders put numbers on the eggs in the order they were laid so they can keep track of which they've candled and which will hatch first. :) At least that's what I do...lol

Hi Sky, Yes I number all the eggs. I have 9 breeding cages at the moment but will be expanding to 16 early next year. Having that many breeding I need to know when the eggs were laid, if they are fertile and when to expect them to hatch. I also foster eggs from large clutches to small ones so that the parent don't have too much work to do.
I have writen records and two software packages that help track the birds and chicks.

Hi Joey, I have only been seriously breeding for just over a year and more so in the past few months. I breed Show Birds. We don't have the term "English Budgies" is Australia. They are show or pet.

Here are some of the adults.

I have plans but they are in DWG Format. Autocad. I am hoping that my boss buys Adobe Acrobat so I can convert them for the forum.

Hi xbudgieluvax, I love questions. after 5 days the egg can be candled. (term for shining a bright light through the egg) I use an LED torch. If the egg is fertile you can see the veins forming. If the egg is not fertile it will be clear.

Here is a Link (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Bluffs/1958/eggs.html) to the information.

I band all my chicks for Shows. You can't show a bird unless it has your ring on it. The rings also tell me all the information on the bird. When it was hatched, who the parents are. What the genetic back ground is.

I found that making Breeding Cages and Nest boxes were the easiest way. It was hard to find cages to start with.

Try some produce stores they some times carry seed.
