Much to my surprise, at least one of the eggs Budgie had been sitting on was fertile. I am surprised because I wasn't at all sure that the daddy, Oscar, knew how to do "it". :) Also I wasn't expecting any to hatch until Wednesday. Also when I candled I couldn't tell if I was actually seeing anything.
The egg hatched during the night. :) But I really have no expectations of the chick surviving and I will be a basket case wondering if everytime I no longer hear it make noise if it has died. :(
Aside from feeding egg biscuit and food other than seed, can anyone recommend what I should feed the parents now.
I never saw Oscar go into the nest box until today. Is this normal?
I attached pictures of the parents and the chick. The mother Budgie is in the box and the chick is about 12 hours old.

Well I'm not all that experienced on breeding. I believe you can feed them a normal diet, as long as that normal diet is enough to make the parents and the chick full.
Well that's pretty much all I could leave you with...sorry!
I hope the chick survives!
Oscar is your male right?Yes most females don't let the male inside the nest box although it can happen in captivity the male does not eneter the nestat all in the wild. Its normal don't be paranoied....its ok they will care for it as long as the female is in thier its ok to come out once and a while the male is feeding her and she is feeding the chick (check the crop) than they are fine:) I asure you...the males job is to teach the little ones how to eat and fly...thats all he does and feeds them when out of teh nest. Sometiems in teh nest if female allows him:D

Yes, Oscar is the male. Actually I was surprised that Oscar wasn't spending time in the nest box because someone posted pictures and both male and female were in the box. So I thought that would be the normal behaviour. Oscar has been ravenous. Must be eating for three or four or more. As far as checking the crop, I am way too nervous to pick that wee little thing up. :embarrassed: I might try when it is five or more days old.
well you could just look from the top if mum isn't inside...if its buldging out than she doing a great job...Yeah nothing to worry about the dad some hens let thier husbands in others do not:) The picture also if the parents were scared and the picture in teh nest box teh male probably went inside to protect the young and teh female was distarcted by the movement in teh nest box...agian it could have been the female some females let males in others dont:P

The parents weren't scared and I got the picture because both were away for the moment. My husband said Oscar went in shortly after the chick hatched and he has been in off and on. Mostly out. I don't think he has been in the box without Budgie. I plan to take one picture every day and leave them alone the rest of the time. Oh and the picture of Budgie in the nest box was taken yesterday, before the chick hatched.

How is the chick going today? I would start feeding the Parents and Mixture of soaked hulled oats and a hi protien mix. If you can't get a breeders mix. egg and biscuit mix is fine. Add it to a bowl along with the seed.

So far so good. Now we have two, I am still amazed. Anyway, I have been making sure that the dad has access to all the food he wants. I have been offering frozen corn and peas thawed in boiling water to which I have tried to add other things like some crushed ZUPREEM pellets and crushed egg biscuit. They don't seem to like the egg biscuit. Today I cooked an egg in simmering water and added the egg shell. I crushed the egg and shell then added a bit of crushed mineral block and a few ZUPREEM pellets plus a few millet seeds. Dad seems to like that. I don't know what an egg and biscuit mix is. Would hulled oats be the same as oatmeal? I know the birds really like my husbands cooked 7-grain cereal mix. I was wondering if I could use the hand feeding/weaning food and offer it moistened to the parents. Thank you for the suggestions and thoughts, much appreciated. :)
Um...you can use that I know some breeders that do that for thier Canaries...but I have never tried it.Mine loved egg while they were breeding (Boiled) egg and mashed. You could also attempt to try some sprouts that are "fresh" or some soaked seeds. If you have never fed them sprouts than they probably wouldn't eat it. Also a cockateil breeder I know:p Sorry I know lots of breeders:p He feeds teh cockateil chicks with formula inside teh nest once a day and helps the parents.. just one feeding. Than the chicks get some vitamins and nutrenits plus some fresh food from the parents...I think thats a good idea Im going to try that when I breed my cockateils agian with that you need to research so...I don't know if you are willing to do that.

Boy you should see dad eat. It is like he can't get enough fast enough. He is eating stuff he would normally turn his nose up at. He just scarfed down a pile of carrot. Then he immediately fed it all to Budgie and is now eating more. Amazing. :) He also makes it clear that he is looking for more food. As far as I can tell Budgie is feeding exclusively from him. He is being such a good father. :)
Ussually all dads are good its the mothers that are abusive to the chicks most of the time:P I don't know why maybe they get tired of sitting in a nest box for a few weeks HAHA
