Does anyone know what egg binding is? is it good, or bad?
Egg binding is a serious and potentially life threating condition. It is when a hen is unable to pass an egg. An egg boung hen will appear ill - fluffed up, lethargic - and should be taken to an avian vet immediately if anything is to be done, otherwise she will likely die.

Egg binding is very bad. Frequently leads to the death of the hen. In a nutshell, the egg becomes stuck and the hen cannot lay it.
To add it is a very painful experience imagine trying to give birth and the baby not coming out being stuck...

A frequent cause of egg binding is a lack of calcium in the diet. Calcium is what helps the egg form into a firm and relatively easily passable "object". When there is a deficiency of calcium, this can lead to poorly formed eggs with a very weak outer shell. This can make the egg very difficult to pass (if at all); hence egg binding, OR it can rupture inside the hen and cause a very serious infection.
Sources of calcium for your budgie are cuttle bone, crushed egg shells and a liquid calcium supplement (my budgie Skyla has been prescribed this by our avian vet because she had been laying quite a few eggs). Broccoli also has some calcium, but is not as much of a significant source as the other items mentioned.

If you read anyother post with that kind of subject, most of the birds either got injured or, more frequently, died. You really don't want it happening to your bird.. (i didn't give much information becasue everyone else gave very helpful info.
