Today i set up 2 breeding cages and a few nest boxes in the aviary. Lots of interest from the many couples in the aviary so i'm off to buy about 4 extra nest boxes this arvo to hopefully prevent fighting. Pairs that are already full steam ahead and ready to breed are: Bob and Akala, Gherk and Tirikke, PB and Asparagus, Lime and Dimsim plus a few others. :D Should be babies galore in a few weeks time. I'm expecting opalines, normals, recessive pieds, dominant pieds and if some of my spangle boys find girlfriends spangles too! Now i'll tell you all now so you can remind me when the babies are 6 weeks old but I AM NOT KEEPING ALL OF THEM!!! So don't forget to remind me.

I'm not really *planning* on specific pairs - more just letting them do their thing and see what i get. I'll get some photos over the next few days though and post them

Here's some photos of what's happening in the aviary. I did some shuffling around today because a couple of the ladies were pairing up with their bros. So we now have a jail cage, a breeding cage and then 8 nest boxes placed around the aviary.

Nice photos. Did you make the nest boxes yourself? I have only seen one kind in the pet stores. If you made them, what dimensions and materials did you use?

I bought them from a pet shop. :)

I have 20 with about 5 bonded pairs. I've had to do a little shuffling around to get the super agro hens out but other than that there's not been much trouble.

I've taken the nest boxes out - we have a few minor injuries now and i'm not going to wait for one of them to be life threatening. So out came the nest boxes. I still have the 2 breeding cages out there (Akala and Bob, Gherk and Tiki) so hopefully i'll still get some bubs.

So I take it your not going to try coloney breeding?

Bea

No, i'm not. Akala laid her first egg today. :)

Bea

Akala laid her second egg today, it was a little bloody but she looked ok so hopefully there's nothing wrong.

In the other breeding cage not much is happening - Gherkin is spending all his time being the hen and hanging out in the nest box while Tiki hardly ever goes in. I'll give them another week or two to look interested then i might put a different pair in the cage instead.
