My daughters favorite pet mouse died last night. His name was Spot. There is another mouse in his tank but I've read where if you don't introduce them when they are small they can fight or kill each other. So, I can't just go get her another mouse. She cried so much for Spot. He would let her hold him and he would come and take food from her hand.

She has wanted a hamster for a while now. There have been so many people rehoming their pets close to me, so I posted an ad on craigslist just explaining the situation and how I would rather adopt one needing a new home anyway. A very nice lady said they have a black panda bear hamster and she is affraid her dog is going to end up killing it because he is non stop trying to get at it. She said if I would just give it a good home and stay in touch she will just give it to my daughter.

I haven't told Alivia yet because she'll drive me nuts asking when we will go get it. I'll post pictures when I get home with him tomorrow. She said his name is Remy.:party3:

That's so sad about Spot. Your daughter really loved the little guy.
Sounds like Remy is going to a great new home. I'm glad the owner had the sense to try to find him a home before something terrible happened.
Your daughter will be so happy.

As we speak I'm cleaning out a little hand carrier to bring him home in. I was given it but never used it until now. I can't wait for her to see him. She is going to go nuts over him.

Even though Spot was a little mouse he really warmed up to my daughter. If he was awake and she went near the long aquarium he was in he would run to the glass to wait for her to reach in and touch him. I would get him out and let him walk on my arms and he would try to get in my hair. His hair was like velvet it was so soft. He was black and the reason we named him Spot was that his tail had a little pink at the very end like a little spot.

There's no such thing as a black panda bear hamster. That's just one of the (oh so annoying) fake names given to hamsters. He's a syrian hamster (probably a black banded syrian)

Male mice usually do fight. Females live happily together though and need friends.
I used to have 3 mice. my last one (Scabbers) died 2-13-07 :( I miss mice so much and can't wait to get more, whenever that;ll be :(

Congrats at getting a hamster and kudos for adopting instead of buying!

Sorry for the lost of Spot. It is amazing how such a tiny animal can touch our lives. I think it is wonderful that you are adopting a hamster who is in need of a new home. Best of luck to you and your daughter on your new pet Remy.

(I know nothing about hamsters...) except they look cute. :)

This site is showing panda bear hamsters for sale:

and some pictures of the black bear hamsters:

...which this site says is a "nickname" for the black mutation of the syrian hamster.

So, is panda bear hamster a nickname for that type of black/white mutation of a syrian hamster?

Who knew hamsters could be so diverse, huh?

Perhaps the lady giving away the hamster was just a little confused as to the exact name of the hamster? Or (I really don't know anything about this...) could it be from the mating of a panda bear hamster and a black bear hamster?:S (Probably not... maybe I should have been more attentive in science class...)

I'm so sorry for the loss of your furry friend Spot, but I couldn't be happier to hear that you're including Remy into the family! It's great that your daughter won't be too heartbroken for too long.

Tell us all about the reception; I'm sure your daughter will be thrilled!

"Panda bear" hamsters are syrian hamsters that are black, usually. But that is a fake name, something pet stores make up so they can sell hamsters for more money. They often call black syrians "Black Bears" and sell them for $15 more than other colors of syrians even though black syrians are not rare. And this is alot more dangerous than it sounds because people will think black bears, panda bears or any other stupid fake hamster name is a whole nother species so they'll put 2 "Panda bears" together and they'll kill each other (syrians are solitary). All because of ignorance of not researching first.

Will, I've seen just what you were talking about in the pet stores with the "Black Bear" hamsters. Indeed, they were quite a bit more expensive. I'm glad I know now that they are just Syrian hamsters. Like you said pet stores trying to sell something "unusual" for a higher price. Thanks for all the well wishes from everyone.

My daughter and I just got home with Remy. He is the biggest, fattest hamster ever! The lady that brought him to me had him in a little tupperware bin just to get him to me because I told her I would bring a travel carrier for the hour drive home.

So, I'm sitting in the driver's seat of the car and open his little bin and when I picked him up he started squealing and it sounded like a little pig. I jumped because I'm not expecting it and I drop him in the passenger seat. My daughter starts crying, thinking one of us is killing the other. I then had to pick him back up and of course he does the shrieking cry again while I get him in the carry cage. Whew, I was glad to get him in. I've never had one shriek like that before. I was very gentle so I know I wasn't hurting him.

He loves his new wheel already. My daughter is in love with him. I can't wait to start working with him to see if we can get him hand tame so Alivia can hold him one day. I'll take some pictures this evening to post of him. He's so cute. He's black and white.

I'm glad your daughter loves Remy. Sounds like you guys already had quite an adventure just getting home.

Now on your other thread you're trying to figure out how to divide an aquarium. Hmmm....(thinking)
