Well i think you should just spend the little extra for a next box. When the chicks 1th get out of the shell there eyes are use to light. It had been know that budgies will lay in there food dish and random places but i think the best place would be a nest box. less chances of the little ones falling out of the nest and getting hurt. Or you can make your own nest box. I've made a desing out of card board. I plan on making it out of wood if i am going to breed which i may do at some point

A nestbox is the best thing but soem budgies will nest on the floor and even in food cups if they want to raise a familt this is not good, very BAD results and hard work. Buy a nest box teh most they could be is 15.00 - 20.00 at max!

They need a nesting box, and they don't use nesting matial, most none birdy person will think that all birds use nesting matial but, this is not true budgies in the wild nest in hollow trees, so don't give them any nesting matial.

It's better to use nesting material though, it keeps the chicks warm and it's way easier to clean. It also helps to prevent splay legs as the floor isn't slippery. :)
