I just got my Budgie. It's five weeks old. :budgie:

I'm wondering when I should start putting my hand in the cage to entertain him

Try putting millets in your hand and move very slow inside the cage. Don't scare him and be patient!! Let him come to you.

As tempting as it is i wouldn't pet him. Most budgies don't like being stroked and cuddled the way larger parrots do and even if they don't move away it can stress them out. Work on stepping up and if he's happy to sit with you see if he'll stay on your shoulder while you watch tv or go on the computer. As he's so young you could also see if he'll let you give him head scratches once he trusts you. A lot of young budgies enjoy this. good luck!

Same as my Budgie called Edie, she hates been stroked so I dont bother.xxx Skyla on the other hand seems not to mind but i dont know if she is just frightened and thats why she has not nipped me or flew away when I pet her.xxx

If, when you're stroking them, they lean away from your touch or even just get pin eyes they probably hate it. :P

5 weeks old... isnt that early.. i got told that you shouldnt take them out of the nest box till there 7 to 8 weeks old if you wana keep them as a pet because there still dependent on their mother...

but ayz if your happy im happy!! congrats on your new bird!!! are you sure its a HE? isnt hard to tell when they are young because it could change?

Baby budgies generally leave the nest box about 4-5 weeks and are eating by themselves by 6 weeks which is the best time to buy them. :)
