I just wanted to let you all know that my budgie Skyla is off to the vet yet again. While giving her a bath today, I noticed that her uropygial gland (the gland that budgies use when they preen that is located on their rump), was swollen and inflamed and crusted over with blood...The problem could be many things: another tumour, a blocked gland, fatty deposits, an injury....

I'm hoping she is okay. I will find out on Monday when we bring her to the vet. My vet did a wonderful job with Skyla's wing amputation, so I have confidence that she will be able to help us figure out what this problem is here and inform us of our options. Keep your fingers crossed for my little sweety...:(

Wow, I'm so sorry Budgiekin about your latest health issue with Skyla. She sure has had her share of problems. First the wing amputation, and now this. . . :(

Let's hope it's nothing serious. Please keep us informed and let us know what you find out. We will be keeping our fingers crossed :fingerx: and will be hoping for the best! :)

PS. I forgot to say that it's nice to have a Vet that you can trust and know does good work. That definitely helps to put a person at ease when you have that much confidence in someone.

Hang in there Budgiekin. Better days are ahead!!!! ;)

Thanks for your support guys; it really means a lot to me. I will certainly keep you updated with how she is doing and what we find out. I'm just hoping it isn't something that is going to require surgery since it would be so difficult to have to put her through something like that again. My fingers are crossed...

Dear Budgiekin, I was so sorry to hear about Skyla's health scare. I had only been reading about her yesterday and her amazing recovery from wing amputation. She is such a brave little lady. My fingers and everything else are crossed that this is just a minor infection that can be cleared up with antibiotics. All our good wishes are with you both for your visit to the vet.
Love and hugs, Jan. X.

Well, my little sweety was brought to the vet today. It turns out she has an infected gland so we have to treat it with an aloe vera gel and with oral antibiotics. She's gonna love being caught twice a day to give her her meds and to rub her gland with the gel. Boy oh boy. But I am happy it isn't a tumour or something else that can be serious.

Oh, by the way, she has to wear a special collar to keep her from pecking at her gland. I took some pictures to share with you.....I feel really sorry for her, but it's for the best:

Thank goodness for the news about Skyla, I haven't been able to rest since hearing about her latest scare. What wonderful news that this is something treatable and not a serious condition, I am just so happy for you both. The pics of her are just adorable, God bless her, she is such a brave little lady. She looks as beautiful as ever, she has the look of a little lady who knows that she is very lucky to have a mom and dad who love her so much that they look after her the way you do.
A big hug to you for caring about her so very much and a gentle little kiss for Skyla,
Jan. XXX.

That's great news Budgiekin! :D

And thanks for sharing those photos of sweet little Skyla. She is so cute, but it breaks my heart to see her confined to a neck collar. It looks mighty uncomfortable.

Do you have to take her back to the Vet soon for a follow-up appointment?

Please keep us updated on her progress.

Great news! So glad it wasn't a tumor or other type of bad news. Skyla still is a cutie even with her collar.

Thanks everybody. It really means a lot to see all these nice comments. Skyla and I really appreciate it.

Her next vet visit is in a week so I'm sure Skyla is hoping to have her neck collar removed. Don't tell her, but I don't think it'll come off that soon...:p

Oh no! :( Poor baby...

Sending good thoughts! That neck collar DOES look awfully uncomfortable.

Sorry I missed this thread. I'm glad Skyla is ok but feel sorry for her that she has to wear that stupid neck collar. Well, if it's for her own good! Regardless of the collar she is still a beautiful little girl!

Does this neckbrace interfere with her daily preening and other mobile activities? It looks as though it is very tight on her neck and does not give her much room to move her head

Actually she is still quite mobile and does continue to preen her feathers. At first, I thought it looked a bit tight too, but it really isn't. She is still able to jump from perch to perch and preen most of her feathers, so no need to worry! I'm hoping her collar will be off soon though so that she can resume as her usual self...;)

Me too, when does the collar have to come off Budgiekin xx

It's looking like Skyla will have to wear the collar for a while. Her preen gland is still in pretty awful shape. She essentially has no feathers on her rump now.

At one point earlier this week, the vet had put on a second collar made out of cotton and adhesive tape (don't worry, the tape wasn't adhesed to her feathers!) since the acrylic collar wasn't keeping her from picking at her rump. She was really stressed out with that additional collar so the vet took it off again and she is back to just the acrylic one you see in the pictures I posted of her.

I really hope she gets better soon!
