Lately I’ve noticed my English Budgie bobs his head…a lot. Mostly, when he’s by himself. He does it on a lot of different occasions too - when there’s fresh fruit in the cage, when there’s music being played, when the others are snoozing, when he sits on the iodine block ( I have a really big one ) and there are times when he just starts chattering softly and doing his head bob thing.
At first I put it down to excitement or showing off…but I’m not too sure now
So I was wondering, what are ALL of the reasons a budgie head bobs for?…

well, i googled eye pinning last nite and head bobbing was included too..it can be 1. a sign of aggression 2. they are over excited 3. just content, i figure when mine do it ( and it used to be just sangria but mojito has been doing it too not as much) they are content

Actually the males do that. It's part of their singing and eye pinning routine. The male will also do this not only to females as a courtship act, but also to other males as part of being a show off. There's no doubt that it's a happy little thing they do. :)

Really? I've never noticed a female to do it. Little copy cats. :p

Eye pinning or dilating is when they make their eyes really tiny and concentrate on something.
My male does it all the time to his favorite ball. I think he's emotionally involved with it.

Dollar only does it when he's regurgitating food for Cloud and the chicks :)

oooh, I hadn't heard of it. So it's when they dilate their pupils? I can 't tell with my babies yet, only Dolce has a hint of an iris. But I will be observing their eyes from now on to see if I catch it. :P
thanks for the explanation.

It's similar but not quite the same.

You're welcome. It's really kinda funny because their eyes get really really tiny. Like little black dots.

My passed Mr. Tumnus loved to bob his head when I took him out of the cage.
He would run around bobing his head up and down at Rainbow then she would join in lol.

Puppy likes to head bob when he is happy playing with his toys. Sometimes he really gets into it~!
And he makes a *tick*tock* sound when he does it too... it's kind of hard to explain, but it's a little different from his normal little clicking sounds~! Very cute.
He also likes to do it in a mirror when he's out of his cage (he doesn't have mirrors in his cage). I notices the eye dilating thing a lot too when he is head-bop dancing. *^_^*

All of my guys do this a lot..to anything and everything.:) They head bob and click their beaks on each other's beaks as well as lots of inanimate objects. They are always very happy when they are doing it.:D
