View Full Version : Too Impatient

I have been trying to tame my budgue, Misty. But every time I spend time trying to get her used to me, I end up being frustrated and feeling like she's never going to warm up to me, let alone, perch on my finger, and i wonder how everyone else does it! I am just too impatient with her. Of course I may be doing something wrong besides that. I don't know. Well for one thing, she and her cage are outside right now, but she'll be in my room in a few days, I think. Are budgies supposed to be this difficult, or is it just me?

It all depends on the owner and the trainer. Some budgies can be taught easily and quickly while others can take forever or just about impossible to train. Also look for other options in taming and training. Instead of using a finger use a perch that the bird is used to.
I'm sure many others can give better advice but remember the younger your budgie is the more easier it is to tame and train. ;)

Animallover it gets frustrating. At one time I only had two budgies jojo and bobo, jojo is great and we bonded, but bobo a male was a devil. We could never get him to sit on our finger and all he did was bit us.

Animallover -- Don't give up on the finger training and remember, animals can feel your frustration. Don't take her "not warming up to you" personal. The best thing you can do is enjoy your training time together -- no pressure! Besides perch training, try changing your "training sessions" to a different time of day. Is the time your spending with your budgie at approximately the same time of day, each day? That could be a problem. Birds, just like people, have their "peak" learning times.
We currently have 11 budgies. All are finger trained except for two - one of which is perch trained [took just about one year to train] and the other simply gets in and out of his cage without "human assistance" :) We've learned to accept them for who they are and we don't feel like our budgies don't like us just because they don't want to get on our fingers or cuddle.
Good luck and most importantly, enjoy!

Alaska still won't let us go near him and its been after 5 days. In contrast, Cymbal jumped on our finger the first day. Patience and trying different things may help.

Yes, everyone who posted is correct. You just have to be patient with the little guy, and I know how hard that can be! I've had my budgie Milo for three months now, and he's still frightened of my finger. However, he's comfortable getting on his "perch" which outside of his cage is the handle of a plastic kitchen spoon. So if I need to get him back inside of his cage right away or he's landed on the floor or something, he knows to just hop up on the spoon... but I have gotten him on my finger a few times, but he doesn't like it. I've just kind of accepted that he'll get on the spoon instead of my finger, and I'm just glad that he'll do that, because he's generally skittish in nature. So good luck!

Just be paitient Animal Lover!! It takes a while but it's all worth it! Chrissie was terrified of my hand at first but after spending tons of time with her alone in my room, she has done really well!! Take your little guy away from any distractions at all. I found this helped big time with Chrissie! Good luck. ;)

Hey Animal Lover.
I feel your pain and frustration!!!! When I first got my Oscar it was exactly the same for me. In all truth what you need to remember is that you need a lot of patience when taming a bird. It's taken me nine months since getting Oscar to get him tame and friendly like he is. I've managed to tame two budgies now (sadly Ozzie is no longer with me) and the best way to tame a bird I found was to spend loads of time with them. When I got Oscar I used to take him into whatever room I was going to spend time in e.g. if i wanted to watch television in the bedroom I took him too in his cage. Probably sounds silly but it worked for me. Now the little devil won't let me leave his sight when he's out of his cage. Try and get him finger trained. I have posted some public journals on how Oscar and I went if that's any help to you. Keep us posted how it goes.
Good luck.
Lots of love Jess and Oscar

Wow! everybody is so encouraging! Thanks! Too bad I can't take Misty with me everywhere (my dad's afraid that she might have a disease, so she stays in my room). But i'll try some of you guys' suggestions! Thanks, again!
