This is one of those things I expect will be impossible to figure out. Every once in a while I hear beats from my computer. This has been going on for a while and at first it was so quiet I wasn't sure I had actually heard it and figured I must be knocking against something with my leg jiggling. The sound used to be rather quiet and crisp, but today it is louder and definitely coming from the speaker and it has that raspy quality of a poor quality speaker or a blown one. The sound is reminiscent of a heart beat and there are three beats (or four). This is going to drive me nuts.
I am posting this on the very off chance that someone has come across this type of thing before.
Why not try some other speakers? Hope you get it sorted!

Speakers are fine.

It's will be kind of hard to work the problem out if we cannot hear the noise. Do you have any electronic or radio active products near the computer like a mobile phone? Have you got a computer microphone plugged in?
How high have you got your computer speakers turned up because if they are too high then you might pick up a small crackling sound. It could also be your sound card inside your pc. :)

Is the noise coming from your computer box or the speakers? It could be your on board speaker telling you is something up. Do you know what motherboard you have?

Okay, I am going to assume that by radio active you mean something that is broadcasting not something like uranium. :) You have some good ideas to experiment with, my son has a cordless mouse not too far from my computer and it is possible I am only hearing the sound when someone is using his computer. I also have my cell phone on my desk and it has intermittent reception and the charger is also on my desk plugged into the same power bar as my speaker's power supply.
Other than that, my speaker volume is on low, I don't use a microphone but in any case it is set to mute and zero volume in the audio control panel. My computer has been running since 1997 but I did change the power supply to a really good topline one within the past year.
Thanks Zarrion, I will experiment with my cell phone and the cordless mouse to see if I can duplicate it. Haven't heard the sound since this morning, but then I moved/unplugged my cell phone and no one is using the other computer right now.

That is good to know. I haven't heard it again today but next time I do I will look to see what wireless things might be active. Our houses are so close together in this neighborhood that it could even be something at my neighbours. But I am glad to receive the suggestions since they actually make sense and I would never have thought of it. Who knows what I could have ended up taking apart unnecessarily. :)

Yes that's the best way to put it, that's what I also meant even though I used the word radio active. :o

Radio active is the right word too, just might confuse some people!
