Hi :) Ok you can get like supplementary seed/ fruit sticks from pet stores and things. Now, my budgie will not touch anything green, but I have discovered he can get through one of these seed stick, ( they are about 20 cms long :o) in about 1/2 an hour! He loves them, and he's not scared of them. Perhaps it's because they look like his food.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has made any themselves, wit lollypop stick for example, and if anyone had any good recipies. I'm struggling a bit with the binding agent... I was thing honey might be a bit too sweet, and not healthy? Iwas also thinking of putting lots of veggies in there so he gets his vitamins in a way he likes!

Any ideas?
Thanks!
Nicky

How ever you do it, maybe you can use powdered vitamins mixed in, to ensure a good dose of vitamin A?

I don't know. Ive heard of some people using peanut butter, and then baking it so it dries together, but the ones at the pet stores are glued together with honey...

I've heard use egg whites and mix it together, then put it in the oven for a while. I also heard gelatine can be used as well. Googling it is the best way to find it. My Dad wants to make some as well.

i make seed treats sometimes...
you just have to remember to keep the 'hanger' made from non toxic materials, you can use a stainless steel hook, or a bit of safe rope or string, old safe metal insides from seed treats you bought in the past... or even safe wood sticks, like 'ice cream' sticks or dried branches...
if you use dry branches, remember to disinfect tree twigs in 150Cdegrees oven for 30 minutes! you can also use pine cones, for pine cones, cover them with boiling water in a large baking tray, then let it stand for 15 minutes, once this is up drain off water and bake in a 250Cdegrees oven for 30 minutes! you will need to leave an area free to either tie rope/string/leather/wire to hang or leave them rolling on the floor!
i usually use the 'fruit kabobs' i buy, as i have a lot of them...

heres how i make them...

BASIC SEED TREAT(not on a hanger, but you could if you wanted)

-2 cups seed/pellets
-1 egg white
-2 tsp honey

the general rule is one egg white per cup of seed, but sometimes you need more or less, its best to just gage how stuck together it is, start with one, and add more egg if you need to)
mix the ingredients in to a bowl...
grease a muffin tray with sunflower oil
bake in the oven for about an hour at 120Celcius degrees...
make sure you cool before serving to your birdies!

a better one (is not great for your birdies to have too much honey)

SUPER SEED TREAT!

-hanger of choice
-seed
-chopped Nuts (appropriate for bird)
-pellets and dried fruit
-egg
-honey
mix dry ingredients together then mix in the egg. press the mixture onto the hanger...
bake in the oven at 200Cdegrees for 20-30 minutes until toasted, brush honey over the seed treats and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes (again, cool before eating!)

hope this helps!
