I've read, that if caught early enough Vaseline works but make sure not to clog the nostrils
and i am pretty sure from reading on here about using the vaseline you don't put it on overly thick either, just put some one a q-tip and smear it on
but i'm not sure how many times or for how long
hopefully some one will be along soon with that answer
Hope she gets better soon

Do you think you can post a picture of her? Her cere and her feet? Sometimes, the mites can appear in both places.
I caught Grace's Scaly Face early on and I did take him to the vet as soon as I saw the "crustiness" of his cere. I got his Ivermectin and treated him with that, but I also applied a bit of Vaseline with a Q-Tip onto his cere and rubbed some on his feet. (He started to tap dance lol, which basically meant his feet had mites too)
I did it once a day for about three weeks, the mites were gone :)

For now, I would just smear on some Vaseline lightly. It also helps to rub a bit of Vaseline on your fingers and just rub the feet :)
The Vaseline will block the holes that the mites are digging and it will kill them.
Let us know how it goes :)

Actually scaley face is easily treated with Ivermectin and you don't have to see an Avian vet for that a regular vet can treat your bird.:) I would take him to a vet in the early stages before it gets out of hand. Vaseline might work, but then again it might not and if it got to an advance stage you would need to see a vet anyway.

I understand you can buy ivermectin online so I would have though any vet would be able to sort Mimzy out, shouldn't need an avian vet. I wouldn't rush to buy it online and do it yourself though as you have to be very careful with the dosage.

That's true absolutangel. My first vet who treated Pippin is not an Avian vet and he was able to treat Pippin with Ivermectin..so it doesn't have to be an Avian vet.:) I also agree about not getting it online and treating it yourself because it is very potent medication and too much could harm or even be fatal to your bird.

I have just been through a severe episode of scaly face/mites with Ivy, my new little rescued bird! Although I am not an expert, I have been studying this constantly lately and also have been asking the opinions of vets, breeders and people that have owned birds for years - to get the best information. I've really thrown myself into finding out about it! So to find out what I've learned about Ivy's mites take a look at:
http://www.talkbudgies.com/showthread.php?t=25244&highlight=mites
I've been treating my bird with ivermectin shots from the vet.
If you can't find a vet to help you, www.allbirdproducts.com has some great ivermectin based products (scatt and orniscale to name a few that are diluted enough that they are safe if you use the appropriate amount. You can call them too (888)588-3892 and they can tell you how it works, how safe it is, etc. I took my budgie to a vet for treatment, but since I rescued her from a pet shop that was not likely to go to a vet for the other birds, I wanted to investigate how to deal with mites when a vet is not an option. I have spoken to a handful of people who recommend these other remedies. Vaseline is not really good for your bird as it is petroleum based. Good luck!!
