Hello
I have been reading alot of articles about budgie diseases and I need to know if my budgie has a respitory infection or Psittacosis and what the treatment is. Here are some pictures.

He has normal coloured droppings and as far as I can tell, he can breath properly. He does shake a little bit though I'm not sure if that is just the cold weather. He is inside under a warm light now. You can see the brown stain above the cere, that means he either has psittacosis or he has a respitory problem? I have read that you give them doxycycline from a vet, but I have also read that you need to give them tetracycline aswell. Which one do I buy to treat these diseases?
Thanks very much

Thanks.

It could be the things you mention or your Budgie could be lacking vitamin A which will also leave a brown stain above the cere...orange or dark green veggies will clear that up, but to be sure you'll have to wait and see what your vet has to say. There is no way for us to know for sure just from a picture..tests will need to be run and a good exam.:)
I sure hope it isn't something serious! Please let us know how it goes at the vet!

Hello all.
Thanks for the help. I took bluey to the vet this afternoon and he says their could be two causes for the brown stain. His droppings are good and he is breathing normally. The vet said the only thing that needs fixing is that bluey is a little fat, abit of excerise will fix that up. He has a broken flight feather which the vet fixed today, that is why blue isnt getting excersise, he never flys.
The causes for the brown stain are:
1. A vitamin A deficiency (like pippin's mom suggested). He gave me a multi vitamin for the birds to fix that problem.
2. The vet seems to think that bluey has been through a moult recently and that brown stain can sometimes happen after the moult. I did not notice a moult though.
Thanks very much for the help.

hello there, well hopefully that multivitamin he gave u works or its just a molt etc....*Crosses fingers* is that multivitamin he gave you a liquid, like are u supposed to put it in Bluey's water or is it in the form of a solid? just curious... is it something like special or something u think u can get at a pet store? i donno i used to try to give my birds these liquid vitamins but didnt work too well because they wouldnt drink it or eat it...
so he didnt say anything about respiratory or pssatocios?
hopefully bluey gets better soon... please keep us updated if you find out anything else and how bluey is doing! ::)

alot of times the stained feathers of vitamin A deficiency Shows up after a molt
that's how it was for Mine (Tweety) I fed him carrots for about a week to a week and a half and its never been back (of course now compared to a year ago he'll eat or at least try anything I give him so he gets all the veggies they need) but back then I had to trick him into eating carrots
but still none of mine like them cut up, or any other way other then in the birdy bread, if i give them some mixed veggies - All that is left behind are the carrots But give them birdy bread (which we put a bag of mixed veggies in along with some other veggies that isn't in that mixed bag) and the only thing left from birdy bread is crumbs (sometimes not even that)

Glad you took Bluey to the vet. How much overweight is he? Poor little guy.
I hope the vitamins work. Nothing about a respiratory problem huh?

I'm so relieved that nothing is seriously wrong with your Bluey!:D Does Bluey eat any fresh foods at all? Sometimes Budgies don't take to carrots right away..I know it took mine awhile, but you can also offer dark green leafy veggies that you can clip to Bluey's cage and Yams are another good source of vitamin A and C.. If Bluey is on a mainly all seed diet it isn't good for him and may also be contributing to his weight problem. It is important to get Bluey eating some fresh veggies and pellets bedides his seed.:)

Hello all.
Bluey is in an avairy with 5 other budgies. The avairy is about 4 meters long by 3 meters wide by 7 foot high. My budgies have a fairly good diet. This is what I give them.
Seed all the time
Diced Carrot's 2 times per week.
Silverbeet once per week.
Eggfood 2 times a week.
Multivitamin 2 times per week.
Cuttle fish, calcium bells and iodine blocks are in their constantly.
Corn on the cob 2 times per week.
Is that enough vegetables for 6 budgies? If I put the silverbeet in the avairy and come back 1 hour later it is all gone, same with the carrot and the corn. They eat alot of veggies. The multivitamin is a power and I'm not sure if you can get it from pet shops sorry.
Thanks for the help

Also, This is offtopic but I have a question reguarding quail eggs. Is their a way to tell if they are fertile or not? They are not clear like budgie eggs so i'm not sure. My hen has laid 4 eggs in the corner and is incubating. I would like to know if they are fertile or not.
Thanks for your time

Corn has many good qualities, but vitamin A is not one of them.
Why not give your budgies carrots every day? Or/and dandelion greens, kale, et cetera (http://www.exoticbirdhospital.com/vita.html).

veggies should be every day
mine get some sort of fresh veggie daily, if its birdy bread day then they're getting carrots, corn, green beans, lima beans, broccoli, cauliflower , plus 15 different types of cooked beans that we put in it, along with Whole wheat multi colored spiral cooked noodles, and cut up pieces of Papaya (only fruit my birds will even look at except for my Quaker Billy), if its just a veggie day, its either fresh kale, Carrots (with tops),Mustard Greens, or mixed veggies - we buy the frozen kind and unthaw enough for the birds for that day

Those are very good veggies to give them..it sounds like all they are lacking is some green veggies like Broccoli and leafy greens.:) As atv has mentioned they should have veggies every day and a good variety. Also a soak mix is good..there is a recipe for it in the diet forum..it is very easy and you can make a large batch and freeze it. My guys also enjoy rice and couscous. If you feed them a varied and balanced diet they won't need vitamin supplements.
