i have had my budgie ( his name being birdie named by my 2 year old son) for 3 days now hes not a baby and was told he would be hard to train, which dont seem to be true as he has been jumping on to my finger since day one.
i was wondering how long before i let him out of his cage, shall i leave him for a few weeks and contiue with letting him sit on my finger for now.

Well it really depends as different people will give different opinions. Is his wings clipped? I would say leave it too about two weeks and continue the finger training. Also let him get used to you saying his name as I have heard of budgies that will listen and come when called. :)

i would not be able to tell you if his wings have been clipped or not, is it important to get them clipped?
thanks for the very speedy reply:)

Well some say it's very important and others say it's not. It's mainly for safety reasons for letting the bird out. It's best to let the bird fly in a room where there not much sharp objects and where this not much electrical items.

I'm sure others can give you better advice as I'm still in the process of taming. :)

Yes I agree. :) Even though my budgies are not tame I still let them out. I then put them back in their cage after they have a rest. :)

There are different methods and it depends how he reacts when he comes out. You may prefer to catch him by hand when he lands, towel, net (I don't recommend) and maybe he can perch on your finger to put him back. :)

Use a perch, that will not scare him and he will go back in no probs. let us know how you get on tomorrow.

That's a very good idea, do you think it will work with cockatiels too? I was so scared of my budgies once that I used gloves. :D

ok im trying to let him out he sits on my finger and move him towards the cage door and he jumps off on to his perch, i dont think he wants to leave his cage.
shall i just leave the door open for him so he can come out in his own time?

No I would use the perch to bring him out of his cage.... the nhe will either stay sta on it or fly off..but it will work, well i hope it does it does with my Joey and I am still having to use it on him

My Bobby have done this many times and so has Benny refused to come out of his cage. Ok answer me one question, will he only perch on your finger if you push it in front of his stomach?

if i hold my finger close to him he usually steps on i got him out of thecage he is now sitting on my finger. i downloaded some budgie sounds and played them, as soon as he heard then he shot out of the cage lol. i think he is still trying to take it all in, just wish my sons were as well behaved as birdie:D

Well you're very lucky to have such a well behaved budgie. Some of them would mostly fly everywhere when they get out and bump and knock objects. :p

he did fly around but not as i expected i dont think he is used to having room to fly he seemed to get tird. so he landed on his cage i went over and he climbed on to my finger. he will even sit on my shoulder if i put him on.
hes a great budgie im thinking about getting him a friend someday.

Hello Cloud1982 . . .

I was just getting ready to log out on this site when I looked up and saw that you and a couple of other people were at the forum. Since I had never seen your name or read your profile before, I decided to check it out.

Although I am not really replying to your first question on this post, I just wanted to congratulate you on your recent marriage to your longtime friend, Jackie. How wonderful and exciting. :D

And it sounds like you have a couple of great sons, too. :)

Anyway, welcome to this forum and I hope you enjoy your time here. :jumping:

Donna

Hey there,

Another suggestion is that once he's comfortably stepping up on your finger without any dramas, just bring him to the door for several days until he's used to that, then once he's ok bring him slowly out of the cage and just let him sit on your finger for five or ten mins and then put him back. If he seems to settle really easy being out of the cage, put him on your shoulder and just walk around the room or do really slow easy things to get him used to it. If he freaks get him back in his cage and try again the next day. If you see him start pacing back and forth along his perch you know he wants to come out so let him. This is how I got my Oscar much trainable. Keep the finger training going as it makes it so much easier when putting them back in the cage. Keep us posted.

Lots of Love
Jess and Oscar
