Hi Everyone,
I hope I can get some help here. I have decided to buy my “mad” bird Peppi a friend :budgie: (I follow your advise and hope his behaviour will improve)

I have a very old cage I want to use but it needs a major makeover. The cage needs new paint and I was wondering if I could just use normal spray colour I can buy at any warehouse:S:S:S. Do I have to look out for anything in that colour that could kill my bird?

Thanks.

Silke

first if it is rusted you have to get every single tiny piece of rust off -

2nd its normally cheaper just to buy a new one BUT you can repaint cages its just a long process

the paint you use has to be Child safe (sometimes referred to as Crib Safe) it is supposed to show a picture of a mother holding a child hand (how ever i've never seen this and I've looked at a ALOT of paint)

then once you have any and all rust removed, clean it really well with a rag and water to get any rust dust off - then let it dry and Paint it / most will take more then one coat so make sure each coat dries 100% before adding another coat

then it MUST air out in the sun for at least 2 days ( I leave it for a week to be safe), then you still can not cover the bird in the cage for another 4-5 days - any fumes that may be left over, would kill your bird if you covered it before it was 100% aired out.

Thanks atvchick95. That sounds very time consuming and I think I am better of buying a new cage. Otherwise my bird wont have a friend for the next 6 months.... ;)

Buy don't repaint, flakes can happen and then you have issues as Budgies LOVE to chew
