I went to wal-mart to get a comet goldfish for my pond.. and it was under quarantine AGAIN! the 5th time this week for ICK!!!!!!! I want to scream! its there own fault for having 1 filter for 9 tanks! and there are 3 sets of tanks so there are hundreds of fish sick (it spread the sickness) ! There was a little 88cent comet i fell in love with! he was white and red and was soooo cute! im going to go up there ever day now to find out when the tanks are open again to buy! i really want him. I think he'll be easy to train to! I mean hand train like hand feeding
I asked the guy there when the quarantine will be over .. he never even looked at me and said 3 days.. ick only takes 1-2 days ....
I HATE WAL-MART! there i said it

I would buy your fish elsewhere. The fish there and at Meijer and the like are always sick and even when not in quar. they will still come home and get your other fish sick:(

Huh...I didn't know you could buy fish at Wal-Mart. But yea I'd have to agree, it's probably not the best place to buy them.

Its the only place to buy them here... plus i feel bad for them and "save them" I know i shoudn't be supporting wal-marts fish but.. i've cured so many sick and almost dead fish from there and seen them to live years.

Sorry to hear you weren't able to get the fish you wanted. I had a similar problem the other day at Petsmart. Went to the one to get a tank divider for when I set up a 10 gallon for my kids 2 bettas, and their tanks were really good looking. They almost always are at this store. Very clean, no dead fish, and such. So I was going to get a algea eater for my tank there. Well they didn't have any dividers in stock. So had them call over to the other store in town to see if they had one, which they did. So I decided I'd just make all my purchases over there. Well I went to the other store and all their tanks were cloudy and they stank. Just going over by them you could smell them.:vomit: So when I got home I came online and filed a complaint. Which they have actually e-mailed me back on twice now and they have filed a corporate complaint for me and are supposed to be back in touch. For me it's the local Petco that always has ick in their tanks.

your not alone but i have no choice - its the only dept. store on my side of town (other then dollar store/ family dollar) but with gas prices this high its not worth going to the other side of town for K-Mart - when in reality our K mart is not better then either one of our Walmarts (we have a Walmart on the south end of town (my end) and the North end of town

My thing is as far as fish goes Petsmart are the ones with the cleanest healthiest looking fish in my area. Of course the one Petsmart isn't, but the other one is.

I always quarantine any fish I bring home, just like with a budgie. Ick is so common, even from reputable fish stores.:( At least aquarium salt and raising the temperature usually works quite nicely on ick, although one has to watch that one doesn't raise the temperature too high for goldies.
I hope they get on top of their ick problem soon, and the little comet survives it.

I don't think the Wal Marts by me sell fish anymore.... i could be wrong though. Haven't been in there in awhile. Wait that was a lie i just went in the other day and looked if they had any little toys for Kayto to use as a foot toy or something. I wasn't in the animal area though.

Bettas are actually the one fish I don't have to fully quarantine.:) My betta tanks (I have five of them ranging from 3.3 to 5 gallons) are all completely separate entities, so no risk of spreading anything. I use a separate net for each tank, which is stored right behind the tank so it doesn't get mixed up, so no chance of net contamination either.
But any fish headed for the goldie or tropical tanks gets a full thirty day quarantine.
I get to buy a new betta soon too. I lost one to a tumour about three weeks back, so I have a tank vacancy. Unfortunately, I will probably lose three more in the next few months.:( Not to illness, but to old age. Two of them I have had for two years now, and the third for over three. Surprisingly, the three year old is the feistiest one of the bunch. :) He's pretty ancient for a common pet store betta.

I'm sorry you couldn't bring home the comet. He sounds so pretty. :( My nearest Wal-Mart sells fish, but only goldfish and maybe a few tetras.
Ick is horrible! One of my neon gobies got it and him being so small, he looked like he was covered in cottage cheese! Thankfully, he got treated and was reunited with his fellow fish :)

No, I don't breed, but I've been keeping various types of fresh water fish for over thirty five years now. These days mainly goldies and bettas, but still have a small mixed tank of neons, scissor tail rasboras, zebra danios and one solitary guppy.
Good for you for keeping your bettas for that long. :) Years ago, that used to be the norm, but they're so poorly bred in appalling conditions overseas for the pet trade these days that their life spans have been badly affected.
Is it bettas that you breed, or other species?
My user name came from one of the tropical fish forums I hang out on, by the way.:)

That's quite the variety. I've currently got two crowntail bettas, and two veil tails. The one I lost recently was a delta tail. I've had angels in the past, but not for a while. The last one I had munched up most of the other fish in the tank as he grew.:( I love the albino cory cats. If my mixed tropical tank was bigger I'd love to add in some of them. They do best in schools or six or so, though, and I don't want to add six to a fifteen gallon. I try to keep the fish very small in that tank. My goldies are three fantails (one orange, one silver and one calico) and a black moor. One of them is still only about three inches, but the others are about five inches now. I wish Midge the budgie ate her greens with as much gusto as the goldies do. Home grown plants are always best. Ones from the store can carry as much disease as the fish can. I've never had the space for koi, and wintering a pond in Ontario isn't much fun anyways. Never tried my hand at frogs, either. Maybe one day.:)

Our wal*Marts don't even sell fish or any type of animals. I was surprised when I heard that some of you can get fish from them.

Right now I am taking down my tank, but when I set it back up I am going to put all male bettas and an going to get them off e-bay and other sites. i don't like how the pet stors keep them in little jars. I have a book on bettas that says they live 10+ years in a rommy tank.

I love fish, I have 6 gold fish, not nearly as many as you guys! I can recognise all of my fish, they are all so unique. They all have their own names to. The 2 oldest are 8 years old and the youngest is about 2.

Both of the local WalMarts close to me always have sick and dying fish. My daughter always has a fit to look at the fish but they are always so poorly looking there. I've bought bettas from them in the past though that lived a long time. I have a male betta at the moment in a 10 gallon tank. His name is Scooby Snack and we love him so much. He's a cutie. I used to have many tanks going, but now we have just the one.

I don't suggest that... and Im just trying to let you know that male bettas (aka. siamese fighting fish) will fight to the death if they come in contact with eachother. even if they see eachother through a glass/plastic divider they will try to fight :( it would be better if you kept them in separate (yet roomy) tanks
sorry to hear about the comet. I hate how wal marts fish always have ick. I gave up on wal mart and caught mine out of a pond that was being drained (I couldn't leave him :( he would have died) but yeah... Ive had him for 4 years now, and Im sure he's at least 4+ years old :o

Four of my five bettas are in tanks that are right next door to each other, and they can see each other through the tank walls. They spend hours trying to insult and intimidate their neighbours.:) I wouldn't like to think of what would happen if they were put into the same tank. In the past, I've had ones that were so aggressive that they would blow their tails from too much posturing. Those ones I had to place in end tanks, and sometimes put a blind so they couldn't see anything on the side they had a neighbour on. Their tanks are all matching 3.3 gallons with filters and lights. I run all the filters off the same air pump through a gang valve. The fifth betta is all by himself in a five gallon.
