Good morning,

You all might remember my handicapped Mattimeo who is doing quite well - his leg will never be normal, but he has worked out a nice niche for himself in my flock. He is the most gentle of all my keets.

Two more parakeets have joined my flock! Both are in quarantine now, of course. One is a half-English budgie (Rowan) who looks like a short Peregrin falcon. He's kinda sorta, well, huge compared to everyone else. Interstingly enough, he has long feathers around his vent, so his plop caked on a tad. I just gave him a warm bath and massaged that area clean - he appears much happier not to have that mess clinging to him.

The other, Snow, is a runner parakeet (runner meaning no-flying?). She has an overgrown beak that continously overgrows so I'm now prepared to clip it whenever needed. She's an albino with quite a unique sheen on her back - it's the sheerest, most luminous light blue I've ever seen (kinda like she was dusted over with mother-of-pearl). You can't notice that unless the sunlight is on her, as most of her wing/tail feathers are tattered.

I'll post pictures soon. You know, one thing this brought home to me....handicapped parakeets are just as wonderful as 'normal' parakeets. What might seem to be an unsightly flaw to a person is simple life as normal for a birdie...I'm quite happy they're all in my life.

Enjoy,

Barbara

Hi Brabara,
Congrats on your new babies. Unfortunatly, english budgies really do seem to have this poo problem. EVERYONE of my english ones gets poo stuck to their feathers and can cake up. They tend to have more fatty areas around the vent causing problems. I have read a few times the breeders will pull the feathers around the vent to keep things clean. They do tend to be a little less active than the other types, so they have a tendency to be fatter than the others!
As for the beak clipping, have you done this to your other birds before? if not, make sure you go to the vet and have them show you what to do. I think you are suposed to file not clip due to the blood supply going thru it. I've never done it, it too chicken, i'll leave it to the vet!
Dont forget, WE LOVE PICS!!! :D

Congrats on the new budgies! I myself have a special needs budgie as you may already know. Her name is Skyla and she has one wing....we had to amputate it because she had a tumour on the underside of her wing. That was in February and she has adapted quite well. One of the unfortunate things is that since she can't fly, she has put on a smidge of weight. She is the heaviest of my budgies weighing in at 39 grams! My other budgies are in the low 30's.

Anyway, I'm so happy to hear that you have a special place in your heart for these little sweeties!! ;)

Morning all,

Thanks for your responses! Regarind beak clipping, I watched it being done (even have the right scissors for it) but will probably end up using a nail clipper or emry board.

And regarding Rowen,
take a look at my peregrin falcon (the 1/2 english budgie):

He's bit blurry, but what do you think? What color is he? I've never seen one that looks just like him....

Thanks!

Barbara

Morning,

Sir Rowen is about 9 weeks old or so. He's extremely laid back...he'll happily perch on top of his cage, and well, perch on top of his cage. He loves chirping to the other keets and they in turn appear to accept him too.

Snow, my runner, is just plain adorable. Her big huge overgrown beak (it was clipped, but even clipped looks weird, kind of like a male elephant seal) plus her duck tail (I clipped the ragged tail feathers) and her red eyes (I was told she might be a white lacewing spangle) make her look like a keet from another planet. And her toenails grow most oddly as well.

Be that as it may, instead of clinging to the cage floor bottom, she now regularly climbs to the middle branch in her cage and has a healthy appetite. She will let me pick her up and cuddle her while I read. Rowen prefers to perch on my shoulder during that pastime.

Enjoy,

Barbara
