I was on the internet the other day and decided to look for a budgie site and here I am. I'm not very forum savvy, so bear with me
My story: About 4 year ago we bought our daughter a chain store budgie for Christmas, it was nice to have a pet bird but I think Skye was abused and she was somewhat despondent. We worked with her and she became more responsive but never really seemed to be very happy. Then one day a friend called me from his work, he worked at a large grain silo and milling operation, he had caught a budgie in their scale house and asked me what he should do with it. I drove down to look at it and had to bring her home. I kept her in the basement (it's finished) until I could get her to the vet for a check up. They talked back and forth to each other constantly once they realized the other was in the house. My daughter named her Buttercup and as soon as she was checked out I put her in with Skye and they were instantly buddies.
About the third week of July I noticed "cuppy" favoring her left foot, I called the vet and explained how it looked and they said it was probably a sprain, keep an eye on it. Well it didn't get any better, her toes curled up like a lobster claw and I took her to the vet to have it looked at. The vet said it was nerve damage and it could be from an injury, he also said it could be from a tumor but they couldn't feel one. So they put a "snow boot" on her to try to straighten out her toes but that didn't work, so I figured she would just have to live with the bad foot. About 3 weeks ago the tumor had gotten big enough to see, my wife has had birds and knew what it was, and we were heartbroken. Buttercup was a fighter, I considered having her put to sleep but she kept eating and trying to get up on her perch and playing with her toys. Last wed. She quit drinking water, she still ate some though. Thursday morning I went out to see her and she was sitting up so I went and took a shower and started getting ready for work. I came back out later to get something to eat and I heard her ring her bell, I didn't think much of it and she rang it again. So I walked over to her cage and she was laying on her side with her wing out and she was breathing very hard, I knew she was close so I picked her up and talked to her for a while and she passed away.
I cleaned her up and wrapped her in one of my monogrammed handkerchiefs and we buried her in the flower garden under the bird bath. Now she can be with all the wild birds she used to squawk at everyday while they were feeding in the bird feeder on my deck.
Skye is a totally different bird now then she was when we got her, she plays more, she's more adventurous and she's so much happier. Buttercup had a big influence on everyone in the family and we all miss her very much
