Hi, I am pretty new to all this, my flock has been aquired over the last year, form only 2 initially, up to 9 currently! Hopefully my latest additions are on their way. I have three pairs in breeding cages with one pair Crystabelle and Paris having produced 3 eggs so far, one other pair Areene and Paulie are spending a lot of time in the nest box together ( I always thought only the hen spent time in the box) and the last pair Lolly and Angel who have been a bonded pair for the longest time not actually doing anything!!
I dare not look in Crystabelles box in case I disturb her, so don't know the actual date of the first egg, is it OK to sneek a peek once a day (I usually try to look at night time but she doesn't always move)?

Congratulations Buzzard Queen!! Three pairs in breeding cages, wow! You sure must have your hands full!

I also thought that only the hen spent time in the nesting box, but my male, Banana has also been spending quite a bit of time with Peaches in the box. I tried doing some research on this to find out why the male would go in the box but couldn't seem to find any valid information.

I know how you feel about trying not to disturb the hen while she's on her eggs. I usually wait until Peaches leaves the box to fly up to the window sill to use the bathroom and stretch her wings. Then I run to the box to take a quick peek before she returns.

If you'd like, I can move this post into the breeding journal section for you! :) Let me know if you'd like me to do that.

both the male and female incubate the eggs, (at least thats how all of mine have done it even my tiels)

I check mine several times a day, I tap on the outside of the box before opening it So i don't startle which ever parent is in the box. if they don't move, we normally just put our hand in by their tail and they'll get up and move over(usually)

thanks guys, yes please move to the breeding forum, that way I can just keep adding about my expected arrivals!

When I checked earlier today there were 4 eggs, Crystabelle is an albino and Paris is yellow and green opaline (I think:)) I have no idea what their chicks are going to be like, its all very exciting.
Another pair is Areene who I got from a breeder who had already had one clutch from her, she is a golden face cinamon violet - so I was told! and Paulie who I have paired her with is a normal sky blue, although I am not sure he knows what to do:o he spends a lot of the time sitting outside the box and when it goes dark he goes inside with her!
The last pair have been together for ages and they chose each other, but so far do not seem to have been keen enough to produce eggs. They are a dark eyed lutino - Lolly, and Angel he is a normal grey.
So I have my fingers crossed for the first pair!

Congrats on the soon to be new arrivals:) I think it should be o.k to have a sneek peak once a day but not too often as they will be disturbed.I thought that only hens go in the nest box too, humm strange.
Im affraid of my budgie laying incase she egg binds:(,she is my fave hen:)
XOXO

I have my breeding birds inside in my spare room, however I was just reading a thread about cold weather killing off chicks, this was in Australia, I am not sure if the birds were inside or outside.
Do you think mine will be OK inside, the temp here is usually no lower than 4 and about 14 for a normal Winters day?

Is that the temperature of where the eggs are going to be? Parakeets can handle from freezing all the way to 100F(37C), but their normal range is 65F to 80F (18 to 26C). So to me that seems a bit to cold for the eggs to survive, if mom were to leave them for too long they would all die. :( But I am no expert at budgie eggs.

mine are in the house, our winters here in Indiana can get pretty cold, i know several times this past winter it was in the negatives

but I kept the room my birds are in at around 70 degrees all winter long and thats when mine actually started laying was mid- end December,

they say birds can withstand the freezing and high heats - but they need to be accustomed to it first, and that can take a long time, you can't just put birds out side, in the spring/ summer and let them live there all year long automatically - the heat would kill them, then whom ever was left come winter, the freezing temps would kill them. it's something that needs to be done gradually (but I'm not an expert on birds being out kept out side all the time. I just take a few of mine out side for a little bit during the day. but never in the winter. just in the summer/ Spring.

things are moving along now! Crystabelle and Paris stopped at 5 eggs and Areene and Paulie are up to 4. Paulie was the one who was spending all his time in the box with Areene - this seems to have almost stopped now - maybe she is laying down the law now there are eggs around:)
I returned my other pair Lolly and Angel to their aviary because they just were not "getting round to it". they both seem happy to be back in the bigger space.
By my calculations Crystabelles first egg should hatch in 2 or 3 days - as long as its OK that is. fingers crossed :budgie: :budgie: :budgie:

So excited, the first egg has hatched, I know the eggs are small but the size of the chick just amazes me - they are so small!!!! I knew that one was hatched in the morning before I went to work, but didn't look..... When I got home from work, I gathered my two kids and the husband and lifted the lid.....:budgie: Yea! It was sooooo cute. My 11 year old daughter was just in love with it instantly. I can't wait for the rest to hatch now!:):):):)

This is so exiting, 4 chicks have hatched from 5 eggs, I'm not sure if the last egg is going to hatch though, by my calculations it should have yesterday. The chicks are so cute the oldest one is now getting its pin feathers, still can't tell what colour it will be yet..... Crystabelle is such a good mum, she skreeches so loud at me whenever I take a peek at the chicks to see who has hatched.

My other pair, Areene and Paulie have 6 eggs and they are due to start hatching about Friday this week. I am a bit concerned about Paulie, all he does is stand guard outside the nest box (he is the one that spent a lot of time inside the box early on) I never see him eating, I hope he is feeding Areene!!

How much cleaning up of the nest box do I need to do? I assume I put the chicks in a dish (lined with a cloth so they don't get cold:)) and then just brush out the nest contents, should I do this daily or every other day?

I shall take some photos when I do the clean out!

Since my last post the last egg of Paris and Crystabelle has hatched so they now have 5 little chicks. The oldest few are starting to get their feathers and and one appears to have mostly white with some yellow in their wing. I have taken photos but am working out how to reduce the size and put them on here!

The other pair, Paulie and Areene only one of their 6 eggs has hatched so far, I am convinced that the chick is smaller than the newly hatched chicks from the other pair - I just hope that Paulie is actually doing his bit by feeding Areene! I hope to go home and find another chick - fingers crossed!

WOW, my budgie chicks have all grown up now.

The 5 from Crystabelle have all found homes with various friends. Of Areene and Paulie's eggs only 3 hatched. Then when they were about 3 weeks old - disaster! Areene started to pluck them. It was really scary not knowing what I should do for the best, I decided that Paulie would cope and if he didn't there was always Paris and Crystabelle could foster them. I put Areene back into the aviary and as soon as the chicks started to ask for food good old Paulie fed them rifhr away. What a good dad!

I've tried to add 2 photos, both from Crystabelle and Paris' chicks.
