So I brought my little Skyla to the vet yesterday as she had been starting to tail bob and I was kind of worried about her. The vet took her in and suggested a few tests....a complete blood count (CBC) to test for infection (from egg peritonitus), an ultrasound (yes, you heard me!) and possibly an x-ray.
Given that I didn't want to leave her overnight at the vet clinic, we took her home and brought her back in the next day for the tests. Well, it turns out that her CBC came back with no sign of infection (yea!!!) and her ultrasound revealed an egg inside her that just wasn't getting expelled.
What was interesting was that by the time the vet had gone to the back room to get Skyla (which was soon after explaining to us that if she didn't lay her egg in a couple of days, we should bring her back in so she could have an injection to "induce" her to lay) SHE LAID HER EGG! (By the way, if the injections didn't work, she'd need a hysterectomy....) So that took care of that problem! I guess Skyla overheard the vet talking about possibly having to come back for injections and she didn't like the sound of that so she just laid her egg. Good girl Skyla!
Now we have to give her calcium supplementation since she has been laying far too many eggs and is depleting her calcium stores (in fact, she has laid 14 eggs since January!). I'll be looking for some fake eggs too which the vet said can help her not lay so many. I just hope I can find some.
Unfortunately, Skyla is in the company of two boy budgies which stimulates her to want to lay eggs. Because of that, giving her hormone injections to prevent her from laying eggs just wouldn't work....so we settle for giving her fake eggs and a liquid calcium supplement...
So, that was our visit to the vet! I'm only a couple hundred dollars poorer, but it was well worth it! ;)
