I could really do with a dark cover for my budgies' cage. They were up at 5.30am this morning..... and of course i was up with them!
We already cover them, but it's very light, so doesn't really do a lot but keep out drafts.
What kind of material is recommended to use as a cover, that would block out light, but also ventilate the cage?

Mine sleep up the top part of the cage so I use something heavy enough to block the light but only cover the upper bit so they still get air flow around the bottom. It seems to do the trick with them.

When I would cover my birds during the winter, I use a small blanket and only cover half the cage. I usually cover the back of the cage and leave the front a bit in the open.
I don't think draping the blanket over the entire cage (from top to bottom), and leaving only the bottom of the blanket for ventilation is a good idea, as it can feel really stuffy after a while.

Depends the size of cage and what bird.

I use a dark thick sheet on the cages I need to block out light, even know its thick its still breethable on my Baby Quakers cage I only cover the side by my bed ( i have my lamp on and where they sleep the lamp would shine right in their faces if it's not covered) I actually have 3 sheets right there , one is hunter green plaid kind of thick, next one is navy blue (thin) next one is white and thin
but their cage is huge So it takes a few more then normal
but if you could get a dark color sheet, Black, Navy blue, hunter Green, Plum purple or any other Dark color and it's fairly thick - you can hold it up to a bright light and not see through it, that should do the trick
on my other cages I have a small fleece blanket that used to belong to my kids but they out grew them, and I only cover the top part of the cage the bottom part is open, but no light shines through.

All you need to do is make sure the fabric is a natural fibre like cotton. Natural fibre will breathe so it will allow airflow through. Wool is another material you could use. Just steer clear of man made fibres like nylon, rayon. polyester etc. as they will not allow air to flow through. It will need to be a dark colour and reasonably thick so as the light will not penetrate. As ATV said hold it up to a bright light to see how much light will penetrate.
