Just joined...my current parakeet is Skybird, an eight year old blue-green male. How long do parakeets typically live, anyway?

Wow! You've got a very mature budgie! My first budgie Apollo only lived till the age of 6. I would say your Skybird is just on the cusp of surpassing the average age which is typically between 5 and 8 years old...Rarely though, some budgies seem to live till the age of 15 or 16..

He's an old boy, but still as healthy and crazy as ever! Skybird I passed on in '98, and Skybird II (current) was bought the same year. He was young at that time, so I assume he was born in '98. I've tried to figure out what his leg ring means; can anyone tell me how to read it?

Ah found this on internet show color and what yr born, Some countries might be different colors.

GOLD - '96
SILVER - '97
GREEN - '98
ORANGE - '99
LIGHT BLUE - 2000
BLACK - 2001
GOLD - 2002
SILVER - 2003
DARK BLUE - 2004
WHITE - 2005
YELLOW - 2006

it also depends on the breeder too. i have purchased babies from this spring and they have a purple/wine color

Yes I agree, I just got 3 and when I got home their leg bands are green, so who knows.:mad:
