View Full Version : Three Eggs

One of my females, Melbourne finished her clutch the other day of three eggs, she laid them in the food dish. I am currently researching how to take care of them. I have put a cuttle bone, extra food dish, and I am trying to find a way to put in a nest box. I have already posted that question. Hopefully these eggs will hatch and then I have to separate Aussie from the females, because I don't want any more eggs. :) If anyone has any advice for taking care of the eggs and the parents let me know. I will keep everyone posted, Mom and eggs are fine, she lays on them for the majority of the day.

Congratulations! Has she explored the nest box prior to laying the eggs? I wonder how you might transport the eggs into the box so she will follow. Hopefully someone has some advice on how to do so!

I'll be awaiting updates! :D

I'm so happy the female accepted the move to the nest box. I bet she doesn't mind since it must be very uncomfortible to sit on eggs that are in the food dish!

Mine are expected to hatch on July 31, so our babies will be only a few days apart! :D

You two make me jealous that you are going to have little babies. :(

Same here :(

I have two beautiful females (Cloud & Azul) that I would love to breed. Azul is even in breeding condition. But I dont have any males that are old enough and I swore to myself that I would adopt budgies from now on and not breed. Plus I have too many budgies as it is and my parents would probably be very angry if I produced several more. But only because they say they're costing too much to feed.. maybe I should start a garden with veggies and fruits for budgies :p

All of mine are way to youg to breed. Which means I have lots of time to research and prepare if I ever want to do it. And since my wife is the only person I have to answer to, I am fairly sure I can get as many as I want. :p

Chick number two has hatched, and I will not be able to give pictures until Friday, because I am om vacation, but my pet sitter told me that chick number one is twice the size of chick number two, which is a great sign, the last chick is going to hatch on Friday I hope.... Thanks for all the responses.

Can anyone help me......I wanted to know when I can handle the chicks so that I can remove the seed shells and clean the box a little, also when do I remove the males from the cage, I do not want any more surprise eggs in my cage......

atvchick95
08-09-2008, 12:05 AM
get yourself a bowl ( i use like a cool whip bowl) place a paper towel in it, gently pick the babies up put them in it, and put them some where where they won't get knocked off, and then you can clean the box

I've never had to clean the shells out, the parents always ate the shells for the calcium (after the baby was born of course).

I normally handle mine from the day I band them (at 9 days old) A few times a day, to check them, clean their feet, clean the box etc.

out of curiosity why is there seed all over the floor of the box?

Danielle27
08-09-2008, 09:34 AM
The mother brought that in.... I wanted to remove them. When do the males come out of the cage? I don't want any more eggs. Egg number three has not hatched yet.....:)

08-09-2008, 09:53 AM
Congratulations on the baby! This is so exciting! :)

I know that some of our members wait for 5 days before handling the babies, unless there is a very good reason to handle them earlier (for example, moving a chick to a different mother).

I'm not sure when the males usually come out of the cage though...

Danielle27
08-09-2008, 10:14 AM
The third egg had does not have a baby inside I just candled it, and I am ok with that because two chicks is enough.......I removed as much seed as possible, and poop.... the babies are very loud and active....Melbourne has to keep a good eye on them. :)

atvchick95

I've taken my males out once the babies hatch,

but like i've said in previous posts I only remove the male when the hen has had 2 clutches or in one of the cases the male at the egg

but as you don't want any more babies - it's fine to go ahead and remove the male.

my males always end up feeding the hen through the cage bars ;) plus she'll eat on her own, and once the babies get a little older she comes out of the box more often. and eats more often.

Thanks for the help, now that the babies are growing by leaps and bounds how do I get the bands for their legs seeing how I am not a breeder, and want them to have some kind of identification.... Also what do I need for the babies when they start to explore.....
:) I am so excited that the babies are growing.

atvchick95
08-09-2008, 01:17 PM
you should of ordered the bands way before they were born
you have to put the band on their leg between 5-12 days old and it takes a few weeks for them to be delivered

you may be able to find some at a pet shop won't be the kind most breeders use though, or see if a vet in your area has any.

but its too late to order them now.

The mother brought that in.... I wanted to remove them. When do the males come out of the cage? I don't want any more eggs. Egg number three has not hatched yet.....:)
When the youngest chick is 21 days old you can remove the female and let the male finish rearing the chicks. This is a better option than removing the male because the hen usually doesn't start laying again. Whichever parent you remove you should watch carefully to be sure that the chicks are being fed

Danielle27
08-09-2008, 11:07 PM
The bands are mandatory right....I had no idea they take so long to come in...maybe I can find some at my local pet store. Everyone is fine, they are both well fed. What about getting ready for when the chicks start exploring, what do I need, I know I need weening food, but do I need other things?

enicol6
08-09-2008, 11:15 PM
None of my birds have bands. They were bought at pet stores which do not always get birds with bands. If you are keeping them, do you really need them. It would help if they got loose but otherwise you do not have to have them. They are soooooo cute by the way and you are doing a good job for an impromptu doula :)

Thanks enicol, I am going to keep them, and so far for the past two years my budgies haven't got out....so maybe I will just leave them off, I know how old they are, I just hope they are not twins......haha then I wouldn't know who is who. The oldest chick now has pinheads on his/her body they are coming in white, I wonder if it is just the down or the actual feathers, it has also opened its eyes a little, they are growing so fast, I will post more pics tommorrow.

That sound so cute. I can't remember if I told you Lila is working on some more too. SHe is currently up to three although none of her last set hatched. I hope some are fertile because she sure seems to want to rear chicks. I look forward to more pictures of your little cuties :):)

Danielle27

Congrats for you, hope they are fertile for Lila's sake, isn't it funny how I didn't want chicks, and I got them, but when someone wants them they don't seem to come as quickly. Good Luck, and I will get more pics up tomorrow.

no bands are not mandatory unless you live in New York(ALL pet birds must be banded to be sold retail, or to be boarded at a pet shop ), Vermont(Importing: All psittacine birds imported into Vermont must be banded, micro chipped or have other approved identification which identifies the breeder), Colorado (all parrots must be banded)

enicol6
08-10-2008, 07:12 PM
I did not know that. None of the birds in Michigan have bands. I use to see them on some long ago but I have not seen them at all recently. We do have many many rules on wild birds though.

I want to start a poll for naming the little chicks, I want rare but thoughtful names, like my kitten's name is Kiah, meanig of the beautiful in Aborigine. I want everyone to put a name in for the first chick, I don't want to name the other quite yet........:)

I just noticed yesterday, that the oldest baby has a dark brown beak, and the little baby has a light pink beak, is that any sign of mutations or am I just being paranoid? I noticed the fathers beak is lighter then the mothers does that mean anything for the mutations?:)

Danielle27
08-12-2008, 12:23 PM
Baby number two opened it's eyes today, and they are RED, does that mean that it will be albino, neither my male or female has red eyes. The first baby has dark blue eyelids and dark blue wings. The second has light pink everything.

Danielle27
08-12-2008, 03:53 PM
Anyone answer my question, what is red eyes a sign of, albino or lutinos? Neither the mother or the father have red eyes.......:S

atvchick95
08-12-2008, 04:02 PM
it can mean either, both Lutino and Albino have red eyes

The only possible way is the father is split to albino

Danielle27

Baby number one has the name Tully after a city in Australia, and Baby number two has the name Brisbane, for short its name will be Brizzie. So now I have in my flock: Melbourne, Canberra, Aussie, Tully and Brizzie. I will post pictures tomorrow. They are growing so fast.

Hi Danielle27 Congrats on the hatchings of the bubs, I am hopeing that my lot will have babies soon too, I must say that being an Australian and living in most of the places that your birds are named after find it fantastic that you have choosen names from the country that they originate from. I am currently living in Melbourne so that is even cooler! Keep up the great post!!!

As has been said the chick is either albino or lutino. Because "ino" is a sex linked mutation the chick will be female. The gene that produced will have come from the male

The first baby, has come out of the nesting box twice this morining, and he was walking around, and he or she was perching on my finger last night. I don't know what to do, he or she keeps coming out, I can show you pics in a couple of minutes, but I have no idea what to do, he or she does not have all its feathers, it is only two weeks and a day old. I don't know what to do please help me..........

I havent read thru the whole thread...

what type of nesting box are you using, at this age, they shouldnt be able to get out yet. Has Tully been plucked on the back of its head?

*edit, just found a pic of the box, the hole looks a tad bit low. Also I saw pics of tully with feathers coming in nicely on the back of its head, now they are just about gone in these pics.

Danielle27
08-19-2008, 12:50 PM
I believe the box is a finch/parakeet nesting box, I don't believe that Tully's feathers have been plucked, I looked through my pics and Tully never had feathers there, Tully keeps coming out of the box, I wonder if I should get a bigger nesting box. Should I put the father back into the cage, and allow him to take care of the babies, I know that mom plucks but she never plucked Aussie or Canberra, but maybe the babies can't fend for themsevles...... I hope she is not plucking them.

BUUZBEE
08-19-2008, 12:55 PM
This 1st pic looks like normal feather growth, even though its blury, i can still see feathers, but the 2nd pic dont anymore.

If the hen is a plucker, i wouldnt put her back in.

As for changing the box, i wouldnt, it could cause more harm than good.

Danielle27
08-19-2008, 09:10 PM
now I am in major trouble....I went out and got emergency supplies, I bought the exact baby formula, and two syringes, because I found tully and brizze have lost more feathers, and I got the bigger box, because Tully was going to hurt him or herself falling that distance every twenty minutes, but now I know why he or she was leaving the nesting box, because it was being mutilated by Melbourne, but I removed canberra from the cage five days ago, and now I have moved the chicks into his cage, do you think he will be able to feed them and sit on them, what do I do??? Help!!!!!!!!!!

Melbourne is great, I let her have supervised play with the males, and sometimes if she is ok with the boys, I let her see her babies, but she is not any worse off then before, I bought her a new toy and treat to make her a little bit more comfortable, but she loves when she gets to see her mate on their toy gym. I posted on your finally thread last night, they look great.

Tully and Brizzie are now in a cage, eating on their own, and loving life, except we had a little accident with Brizzie, she pulled one of her wing feathers when trying to climb up the cage, so I had to pull the feather out as the vet said, because that was the only way to stop the bleeding, she is alright now, as you can see in this pictures I took this morning, they love being around me, they will not go back into their cage unless I forcefully take them off my hand and place them on the perch, it is kind of cute. :D
