Egg Laying...

Hi

My budgie laid an egg today. I've been trying to breed for months so I'm quite pleased. Thing is, she isn't sitting on it and is spending a fair amount of time out of the nest box. Will it go cold and die, or is this normal?

Budgies, particularly those who are new to laying, may not start to brood their eggs until the second or even third egg is laid. This is fine and will not harm the eggs' viability. So, having said that, it is not unusual that your budgie is not yet sitting on the one egg.

Have you candled the egg to see if it is fertile? You should be able to see the beginnings of the embryo and small blood vessels if it is in fact fertile. If the egg is clear, it is likely infertile. To candle an egg, you can bring it into a dark room and shine a flashlight into one end of the egg.

Im glad your budgies have had eggs but im sorry but the egg might die if you keep your windows open and dont keep the room warm. This is normal but your first egg might not hatch although she might lay more budgies ussualy lay 3-6 eggs so you still have a chance my budgie sat on her first clutch of 9 and two hatched so you might still be alright.

I'v read a couple of the things that you guys talked about here and how it said that female budgies may not sit on their first couple eggs...
Well last year my female didn't lay on them whatso ever and basically ignored them, even though she seemed to be broodin but not on the eggs. NOw shes laying eggs and she doesnt sit on them and is scared of her nest box!!!:eek: :S

Is there somthing wrong with my budgie or is she just extremly stupid???:budgie:
