View Full Version : What Features Do You Want Added?
I'm always looking to improve the site. But I can't always do that unless you guys help me out! So tell me, what features would you like to see added to the site? I'll do my best to work on them for you. :)
I would really love to be able to have a picture in my signature.:) I noticed that [img] was disabled in the 'edit signature' option, is there a reason why that's disabled?
I think I just overlooked that option. I'll see if I can enable it for you. :)
Genetics and Mutations is a very interesting topic and one which people are often keen to learn. I think it'd make a great subforum in the breeding section and you never know, it could eventually help get more members if people search google to find what mutation their budgie is they could find this site. :)
That's a good idea. I'll consider that one. :)
I added that forum. :) If you know of any information under that category, please post it there.
I can do some genetics lessons and things about mutations, if they became sticky topics they'd be really easy to go back to. :) I've only been learning about mutations and genetics for a year but i think i know enough to make some basic lessons.

That would work. I'd make them stickies.
I still can't get a picture in my signature. Why?
It just shows up like thishttp://different/
The URL isn't right. I look at the image properties and I got this:
http://different/
If you need a place to upload your picture, go to http://www.tinypic.com. When it uploads succesfully, copy and paste the code in the "Img" field.
Ok thanks. Ive got an Idea for the site! Why don't you have this place where guests can give site feedback?
They can already. They have to click the contact us link at the bottom of the page. That'll take them to a form they can send feedback with. By the way, if you guys want to give feedback, but might not want others to see it you can use that form too.
I'd like a browse thing when you put a pic in your signature. I just can't get one in, even with tinypic!

It won't work with tinypic? Hmm. I'll check that out. And as for the browse feature, that's not possible. Sorry.

Hi Dave. I was thinking it would be a good idea to have a kind of "techie support" forum that would cover things like how to add avatars, signatures, how to post pictures and anything else on the more technical aspects of using this forum. What do you think? Just an idea!
We already have it! It's the site Chit-Chat and Feedback forums.
Budgiekin

We already have it! It's the site Chit-Chat and Feedback forums.
Oh! That's right! However, wouldn't it be nice to have it in a more prominent spot on the site so that members (especially new ones) could easily find it? It just doesn't seem to fit in Chit Chat. I tend to think of "Chit Chat" as being anything that people would socialize about (like hobbies or pet fish. . . .etc). I was just thinking that it would fit better on the main forum page itself so that it isn't buried so deep in the site where many people would miss it. (Maybe it's my technical background that is making me think that it needs to be more visible!!)
I'm just throwing an idea out there. I realize that there are many ways to organize things.
I'd like there to be a section on budgie stories (fiction) to release the creative side of us! They would be quite good to read to, If you have nothing to do!
Well then why not a budgie art/creative section....then all sorts of things (stories, poems, computer editted budgie art, paintings, drawings, etc)
Yeah, that sounds really cool!
Wow, Bea you have all the best ideas!
Only 24 days until Blinkie and Ozzie meet! Oooh, are you excited Bea?
Well Thats a silly question isn't it! Of course you are!
I might consider adding that in the future. It's a good idea. For now though you can just use the Budgie Talk forum.

Why has the remote files option been disabled in my avatar? Ive got a great pic but it will not work, even from www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) , why? Can you enable it for me?
I've found that annoying to, Millie.

Hi Millie,
Is this what you see when you go to edit your avatar?
http://i1.tinypic.com/s4na0n.jpg
You should be able so use the "Enter Avatar URL" option for photos you are pulling from Photobucket and use the "Upload an Avatar From Your Computer" to use a local file. Either one should meet your needs.
Am I missing something here?
Millie
03-24-2006, 02:27 PM
Yes that did come up and I copy and pasted the URL from Photobucket but it said it was a remote file.
Are there any other features you guys want?
I just tried to put a .gif file as my avatar
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/Baby_Blinkie/Animations/Bop.gif<---this one to be more specific. Well it appeared but Blinkie wasn't dancing. :( Do you know why that would be?
WHOOOO! Thanks Dave! Look at him go! :p

I love your dancing Blinkie avatar! What did you use to create it? (If you don't mind me asking).
It's wonderful! I think I might have that program, I don't know.

I would really like a Video section so we can post video threads in a certain place.
Like we now have the picture one...
a video one would be cool
Budgie videos rock!!!
This might be possible. I'll have to see what I can do with the videos...
~*Brittany*~

Well everyone can load their videos into YouTube.com like blueberrybuns did and just post the link. THat way everyone knows where to post the videos...

Hi Dave
Just wondering how possible it is to add some more smilies, even animated ones if possible... Some ideas would be for cute or love - when someone posts a pic of a new budgie, laughing, crying and perhaps making all available emoticons viewable in the reply window??? Just an idea, I really find that emoticons useful in determining a persons tone when they are typing! :happy4:
I'll add more smilies. Just give me some ideas and I'll search around for them. :) And I might be able to make a couple more smilies show up on the editors, but they take up a lot of space so I like to keep them to a minimum.
What about in each forum there could be a usage sub-forum, you know telling you how to use it and you can post your questions. What do you think?
Well we don't really need a whole sub-forum for that. We could just use a sticky thread to explain that (a thread that remains at the top of the list at all times). But that's not a bad idea.

There should be a chat room.....for those of us who like to hang out here.
I was considering this. Let me ask you this: would anyone be willing to use an IRC channel?
bluebird
04-20-2006, 05:37 PM
Excuse my ignorance Dave but i dont know what that is either ! A chat room would be fun but the time differences with all the members may cause a few problems, were all other the world arent we ???
Well I'm England, Like you!
Yes there are a lot of time differences here, but there are plenty of times we're all on at the same time (like right now!).
IRC is, well it's hard to explain. Basically you download a client and it's just another type of chat room. But the reason why a lot of people don't use it is because they feel it's insecure for different reasons. But the area where our channel would be is pretty safe. If you guys want to try it out I'll see if I can get a channel.
Ok! I relize that the site time is GMT+1 but it shows the time of GMT. Is daylight savings used?

Dave see if anyone else is intrested id give it a go
Ok! I relize that the site time is GMT+1 but it shows the time of GMT. Is daylight savings used?
Go to the User CP -> Edit Options and scroll down to the area with time and DST and check out what you have set.

Well I'm not sure how long it would take to get a channel, so if you guys would like to try this out using my other site's channels (which aren't being used) then we could do that.
I've got it right and you have got it wrong! I'm looking at my clock this second, it's GMT and on here it says that all times are GMT+1 and that the currant time is What I'm looking at in England! Do you see or have I confuzed you?!?!
Sorry! Well, here in England the time is 10.17pm right? Well look st the site time and it says 10.17pm, but the site says that all times are GMT+1, but the actual time shown is GMT.
Got it?
Well as long as the time is correct. I'm not sure how to fix it though.
Well it's correct for us in England even though it says it's GMT+1!

Perhaps there is such a topic but I've yet to find it......
Bird shows are a very important way to get ideas and obtain quality bird stock for breeding. Would it be possible to have a bird show topic? I know that ABS has shows in their different areas and they are fun to attend.
I've haunted the shows in the past and have picked up some excellent stock from some pretty big name breeders. They normally have birds to sell at the shows.
Just a suggestion...................
Thanks.
Tom

Do you mean a thread or a forum? If you're talking about a thread, I don't think there is one so you're free to create one. If you're talking about a forum, I'll consider this for a future addition. :)
ETAHoffman
04-23-2006, 11:11 PM
I think a forum would be better as it would be more permanent.
All threads are permanant! But I see what you mean, it would get more attention and people can post their own threads in it.
That is a good idea, as I would like to know if there are any bird shows in England!
Well I'll see how popular the topic is. If there are a lot of threads about bird shows I'll add a forum.

That's really what the profile pictures are for. Maybe you could just create a thread in the off-topic section for posting your picture. I've seen that on other forums before.
Oh, are they? Sorry I got it wrong, BUT, so did everyone else!

How about a forum for purely miscellaneous items? I belong to a music group that has a "SCRAPPLE" forum for off-topic items like "What movies have you seen?" or "What recording(s) are you listening to?" or just plain misc. topics. Perhaps there is one and I just have not found it....
That's the off-topic section.

It's the Chit-Chat forum under the Off-Topic category. There's also a Test Forum under that category as well if that helps.

Maybe a new forum format? With more pictures, like for budgie's health, you can have a hospital cross, Budgie talk with a budgie, etc. Sorta vague to see speech bubbles as the logo.

If you did that Amy then it would be cramped, might cause problems with the forum and also would have too many duplicate features because there are so many. The term they call them is modules or extensions and there are quite a lot for ths software this forum is on.

I have an idea also. How about adding something next to where it says our status like Budgie, Baby Budgie, Older Budgie, Moderator, etc something that says if the user is male or female so no one gets confused about what gender everyone is. I thought it would be a great feature added and should be thought over.
Nancy
12-26-2006, 08:42 PM
The feature I would like is one that explains how all the features we already have work. It would be nice to have everything in one spot so you don't have to search for threads on what Karma is, what and how all the icons work, etc. It might help older folks who aren't that used to computers, foums, etc. This is a great site, but it has taken me some time to learn my way around it.

A-n-M

Hey, How about an adverts section? It might be of great use to people who are selling toy, cages, etc. and maybe people who want to rehome birds. Also breeders can advertise there too.
I sell toys, but I'm not sorted yet. That would be a big plus for the site.

That way when we click the view new topics tab, it wont show there. Like the games, I dont really play them, but they are always coming up as a new post, or like yesterdays problems, if we could just "ignore" a thread, it might cut down on a lot of the drama???

That sounds like a good idea :) However, here are some reasons why it wouldn't be completely necessary.
Most of the banned members here are spammers. Usually, when they are not as active, have low post counts and are banned, you can pretty much conclude that this user was a spammer. And of course, if there is a thread of them spamming. :o
We don't like to ban and only do if it is completely necessary. We do not ban members for a simple reason. We try to tolerate as much as we can until it has gone too far. You can usually see this happening in the public forum, so therefor, if a full member has been banned, it is highly possible the rest of the forum knows why.
Also, most of the members that we do ban, are only banned for a month or two. Having a seperate forum, discussing or just stating the person's behavior and reason for ban, will become a negative part of their reputation when they are allowed back on the forum.
If the seperate forum for banned members be discussed, there are very high chances of bashing and flaming the banned members. That is not approved in any shape or form.
Some banned members are just people that like to send inappropriate messages. Some of these users were previously a member, got banned, and is now sending crude and hasty messages to current members and staff. Some are not.
I think having a seperate forum for discussing bans will be helpful for other members to understand why they have been banned, but it is not completely necessary and it can also be invading their privacy. Somethings are better left unsaid and left alone.
BUUZBEE

Dave,
I know some have mentioned a chatroom and these are great to have! So I am suggesting that. I belong to a couple other forums (not bird ones) and we use them. You can set up a free MSN group and then only make a chatroom. Then members here can sign up there and you can set it to where you have to approve membership or auto (I suggest that you have to approve it, that way you have control of who is in the chatroom). All you have to do on this forum is set up a section in one of the threads for chatroom and post a link to the MSN chatroom. You can post set times for each time zone so that members can plan on making some chats and you can also have it where if a member is online wanting to chat they can make a post saying, "hey I'm in the chatroom come join me." Also every so often you can set up special chat events, like roleplaying, topics like breeding, feeding what ever!
If you have questions about it just ask! I think a good name would be the Chirp Cage!
Maybe a Housing forum? On cages and avairies?

I very much like the talkbudgies logo and wouldn't change it. However I am back to something I mention a few months ago. With more and more people signing on I think more sub- forums under the budgies forum would make it easier to follow the subject you are most interested in. Sub-forums like-second hand budgies-rescue budgies-handicapped budgies. I would like to read on how well people did with training a rescue budgie. How people make a cage better for a handicapped or older budgie.
Also at were forums are listed I would like to see the name of the moderator for that forum. Maybe a feature were you could check out more stats about this site like, how many people are from were, how many male/female.
Thanks for reading!

I'd be willing to add some more sub-forums. Any suggestions (anyone)? They should be general, but not too general.

Id like there to be a function where you cant ignore a persons threads just by clicking on a button not having to individually ignore each one.

You mean ignore every thread a person makes? Well, it's not possible to ignore just every thread they make, but if you wish to ignore all threads and posts they make, just add them to your ignore list.

hey,
i was looking at some pictures of cages and i noticed something
Allot of people have the bars go from up to down...instead of left to right...
wich is like... terrible for a bird like the budgie that loves to climb! its terrible for the paws to hold on to vertical bars..
so i was thinking:
how come there isnt a sticky about how do you find a good cage?
bars,
bar spacing,
amount of feeders,
size <> amount of birds
i also heard that round cage's are not good for budgies.. cause they dont have a corner to feel safe when there scared... but i dunt know bout this. i do know that some round cages have a bigger bare spacing on top wich COULD result in your bird getting stuck.
this way people know what to look for in a bird cage..
also possible to like ask if your cage is ok... you get that question allot, if you put evrything in 1 topic people can also see what are DO's and DONT's

I have to disagree almost all my cage bars vertical and they have an easier time climbing around on those then bars that are horizontal

then i found the diffrence between american and holland...
btw the diffrence between a budgie cage.. and a kanarie cage... is mostly that absoluut kanarie cages only have vertical bars.
but stil even without the bar thing.. a sticky about buying bird cages would be handy right?
question what the spacing of bars is always gets asked 10.000 times...

I think that's a great idea!:) I'm surprised there isn't one already. Members are also always asking about the sizes of cages and how many Budgies can fit in whatever size cages.
Does anyone want to write one up? If you do I'll stick it.:)
Bar spacing
Diminsions for one Budgie
Guilotine doors
Not housing other species with Budgies..
and whatever else anyone can think of that would be helpful to include. Just make sure all information is accurate.:)

Multiple quotes would be nice. It's kinda annoying having to quote one person, then copy it, then go back and quote another person and answer that, paste the other quote to the top/bottomof that quote, and then do it all over again for a third quote. -_-
But yeah, a button for multiple quotes would be nice. Like where the quote button is, but one where you press as many as you want and it will quote all of them when you're done. If that makes sense? Or if it is within the mods/forum persons ability for this forum?
I've seen it on other forums and it is sooooooo nice to have ;)

Dave - webmaster extraordinaire!
It was just a flip of the switch. :P
I dont know if this is possible on a site with alot of people (I've only seen them on small member sites) but I think a chatbox at the bottom o the page would be neat.
Alot sites dont have these because they think it takes away from the rest of the forum (people posting on cbox instead of in threads) but I dont thats true. Cboxes are for totally random things that don't really deserve a whole thread.

The problem with them is that they can really slow down the loading time for the forum home. I agree they can be a fun addition, I'm just not sure if it would be worth it to slow down the forum home.

I don't think ANY more features should be added. Personally I like Talk Budgies just the way it is. I am familiar with the way its set out, I know how to do things and I know how to search for things. It is the simplicity and basicness of the site that makes it so fun and popular.
Although I would like to see a few more competitions. There are hardly competitions held. The last one was the one about designing a poster and I thought of that idea. I can't even remember the competition before that.

I used to go to a site that had live webcams of a Abanded hospital (it was a ghost forum) and the bottom half was Chat, top half was the live cams
then you went to a different link for the forums and we posted just as much on the forums as we sat there and talked
But I think it would be neat to have a separate section (from forums) of a chat room type thing.
where people can talk about anything (still family friendly and it can be set to block out any bad words, cuss words etc.)
and having it separate from the forums, I don't think it would slow it down any. like have a link on the front page or some where to click to go to Talk Budgies Chat Room or something like that
Just an Idea to toss around.

There is a great competition going on right now for Member of the Month. Staff will be choosing the first winner at the end of June.:) This is a title well worth striving for in my opinion.
Before the poster contest there was the Easter Budgie Contest.:)
We typically do a contest once every couple months. We can't do too many or else they won't be as special. :)

how about a forum for other pets. we have one for other birds and chit chat, but I think that with so many animal posts in chit chat, theres not enough actual "chit chat" posts, like the ones cliff does.
Pippin's mom
07-02-2008, 12:39 AM
I think the problem with having too many sub forums for other animals, birds, etc.. is it takes the focus off of Budgies and this is a forum dedicated to Budgies. There are plenty of forums out there for every bird species known to man as well as other animal forums. I like that Talk Budgies focus remains on Budgies.:)
Just so long as there isnt too many forums none related to budgies I dont think its a problem. isnt there only 2 none-related budgies forums on here? On a hamster forum I'm on there is one forum with like 15 sub forums on many things including other animals and pets. then theres just a basic chat section as well.

I was wondering if there could be something added about cage safety.
There's always a lot of discussion about doors the birds can open or doors that close on them. There's potential hazards with toys, both store bought and home-made. And there's outdoor safety when people want to take their birds out.
Sometimes a little bit of prevention is all it takes.
Like that old saying...an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I agree. Good idea!
Maybe a rating or feedback section on products? Like Amazon has? That's where I got before I buy most anything. Sure would be nice when shopping for a cage that's hundreds of dollars.

This really isn't a feature, but on another forum I am a member of (not budgie related) we have had gatherings of members during event specific to the forum....
So like if there is a bird fair/mart/show members can meet up there and shop/watch it together....
So maybe there should be a section specific for people to post dates of events like shows/marts/fairs...
I have seen some shows posted, but I am not sure what section they are usually posted in...so maybe one of their own section would be a good idea!

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned yet but I would really like to see a sub-forum about rescued budgies. Training, health, rehabilitation, disabilities ect...
A lot of times a rescued bird requires very different training methods and even dietary programs than a bird purchased from the pet store or breeders. I have a suggestion for this site:
I am on a forum where they have a map where members can add their location. You can then see how far other members are from you. The closest member there is 600 km away from me:p
This would be a wonderful feature for this forum, because we have members from all over the world. That map would show people on every continent (I think) and in so many countries....
Of course, I have no idea how difficult it is to install something like this....:o

On my other forum it is beside the member's list. And on everybody's profile. If you look at a profile, you can see how far that person is from you. But only if they put themselves on the map. To put yourself on the map, you just add your postal code or zip code, and your town comes up.
Some people on that forum are 15000 km away:eek:. I don't think I will visit any time soon.

Would it be possible to add section to the photo gallery? I think it would be neat if people could post crafts/drawings/paintings/other art they've done of their budgies or for others.
Or maybe that would fit more in the signature-making area? I don't know. xD

One think i'd like is the opposit of the subscirbe to a thread... but to ignore a thread.
There are 2 forums i have blocked, the signature and forum games, but there are some threads in chit chat i have no intrest in. I'd like to block those particular threads in the chit chat forum.
plus we still need to figure out how members can block social group forums from showing up too!
go to Thread Tools and then click
Ignore thread :D

Im not sure if i just overlooked how to do this, but I think it would be really good if we could have photo albums on our profiles that people can add comments on individual photos. Like on myspace and facebook :)

We actually have something similar to that. It is called the Budgie Gallery, and you can upload pictures of your budgies there, and people can comment on it. :)

I don't have a photobucket account. I have a flickr account. I don't want to go shlep over to photobucket to create another account, go through an application and download all of my photos onto another site in order to just post a picture of my pets on talkbudgies.

Hi Jordan,
There is a way around this so you can in fact post your flickr photos here on Talk Budgies (and any other forum too).
Here's what you need to do:
Log in to your flickr account.
Click on the picture you want to post on the forum.
Near the top right of the page, click Share This link (it shows above your profile name and the date you uploaded the picture).
In the options that come up, click Grab the HTML.
In the code that you see, copy the url with the .jpg (or whatever your file type is).
For example, here is the code for one of my pictures in my Flickr account. (The part in bold is what you need to copy).
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28791516@N00/3571869474/" title="phoenix 2 by Budgiekin, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2457/3571869474_be35e5b1af.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="phoenix 2" /></a>
6. Go to your message in the forum and type , then paste the URL, then type [/url]at the end of the URL (no spaces between the IMG tags and your URL.
And voila!
Here's a photo of Phoenix from my Flickr account:

Apparently, according to many people on the net, you should be linking back to the Flickr website too if you do this (I have not checked on this myself but suspect that if you were to read the Terms of Service, it would state that in there if it was required.
I hope this helps!

Oh! I keep hearing people say you can only use your photobucket account. ok thanks!
Not at all! It's not as easy to use Flickr, but it is possible. It's also possible to use other image hosting sites as well. Isn't this great news! :P

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but it would be great if we could upload more than one pic at a time to our gallery :)

Hey, I thought that maybe we could have a budgie of the month like TalkCockatiels does. Just an idea
We've reconsidered bringing BOTM back. Stay tuned for details. We haven't quite decided whether or not it will come back. If it does, we'll still have to work out the process for it.

Hi Dave, is it possible to add more than one pic to your profile?
Thanks,

This additional feature would come in handy... at the bottom of each page, a link that takes you instantly back up to the top. :)

In the bottom corner of each page, there already is a "Top" link. :P
Also, it's only possible to upload one photo to your profile. If you wish to upload multiple photos, you can use the photo gallery. :)

I reccon we should have a ''for sale'' form.
Cassidy
01-20-2010, 03:26 PM
Yes a for sale place would be great! Or maybe a rant place because i know alot of us like to rant

The For sale section would be a nice idea. I don't know about a rant section though, they seem to fit in okay in the chit chat section.
