Hi all, I've had my budgie for about 2 years now, and very recently he's started making squarking noises alot. Now we get alot of magpies around our area, that sit outside, making their..well..bark noise (thats the only way i can describe it!) and i have a feeling it might have rubbed off on Jojo...does anyone have any ideas on how I can get him to stop making such horrible noises?
He's perfectly healthy, and is now currently sitting talking to himself, making rather cute noises, but then randomly he will start getting rowdy!

Help, its very annoying at dawn when he see's it gets light!

Welcome to the squarking club! My budgies will do the same, especially in the morning. It seems like it is part of their routine. In all honesty, I have just accepted this "noise" as part of their habits and it just makes me laugh everytime I hear it. I realize it isn't the most pleasant noise a budgie can make, but for me, it is part of how they are, albeit a bit cranky! :p

I'm not sure if anyone can offer you any tips on how to quell this. Sometimes to encourage a bit of quiet time, I cover their cages with a blanket. It works occasionally...

the only thing i can say is, attempt to get jojo into a different sound, that you wouldn't mind hearing, Maybe search you tube for Budgie chirps, and play it when the wild birds start chirping (if possible) or any time through out the day several times

maybe that'll get jojo to forget about the annoying squawk and go on to something more pleasant

Magpies are the worst!!! Everytime I hear one, I tell Birdie NEVER to make a sound like that!

A couple of my screensavers have the sounds of various wild birds chirping. Midge usually starts squawking when they come on - I think she's trying to call to the birds she hears!! I really don't mind the noise at all. She doesn't do it for hours on end or anything like that. I'm wondering if I should start looking for a screensaver with actual budgie sounds - I bet she'd love that.

There are no Magpies in my area but there are lots of sparrows! Mudgie likes to sit outside and listen to the birds and chirp back. He picked up on sparrow sounds and now its like I have a little sparrow in my house :) tehe! Once a budgie learns how to say something, I dont know if he'll ever forget it. Good luck with Jojo! I've never heard a Magpie chirp but if it sounds like barking, you can tell everone your budgie is a guard dog! HA! :)

lol its a hard noise to describe...sorta sounds like a bird with a real bad cough lol

And funnily enough, Jojo is being very good today...except this morning when noone was downstairs...its like he makes that noise to wake people up and get them to go and give him attention lol bless his little cottons.

We have loads of magpies round here, they wake me up every morning at 7am :( Their noise is rather annoying, coz its not a tweet is a serious angry noise haha
