Fimo is a name for a brand of polymer clay made by Eberhard Faber. According to a 2002 U.S.PIRG report Fimo contains polyvinyl chloride (PVC) mixed with phthalate. Though other brands of polymer clay exist, Fimo is the best known. The material comes in many different colors; there are many finishes to choose from, and even a softener to use with it because it can be hard to work. It is used for making many things, including jewelry, accessories, and small trinkets. Once shaped, Fimo is baked in a standard or toaster oven for about 30 minutes at 110°C to harden it. Once baked, it can be cut, drilled, painted, sanded, and sliced thin.

I believe PVC is toxic to birds if they eat any of it it. So it may not be a good idea.

Thanks Deuce!:)

I would stick with natural wood beads that don't have any finishes on them. You can dye them with food coloring to make them colorful. Plastic beads are also fine..make sure they aren't too small so they don't swallow them.

I wouldn't risk using glazed beads. The other beads you mentioned sound fine though.:)

Are they solid or is there a coating that will eventually flake off?

I just use the plastic beads that you get at a craft store. They're non toxic and colorful. In fact some of the beads I use look just like the ones on the swing. Is there a craft store you can take a look in. They have all sort of stuff you can use for bird toys.
Just be sure the beads are either knotted between each one or together tight so they don't get caught in any of them. I like to use twine. If you do use craft wire be sure that there are no ends sticking out anywhere.
I only use the plastic beads and buttons. I never thought to use wooden beads. I'll have to check that out.
I'm always concerned about cage safety so I double check every single knot. One minor mishap taught me that. On a hanging toys I like to have a little twine hanging. Not too long so they don't get their feet knotted if they try to climb it.
