Hey,

My family got a new budgie three week's ago. We named him Freddie, and he is a total mentalist compared to all the other budgie's we have had. He seriously never stops moving, or flying or chirping or anything.

Recently though Freddie has taken to eating a lot of paper, he also has a habbit of diving in the plant pot and flicking up and eating the soil, and today I caught him eating his poo. I don't think it is because he is hungry or anything because he is always eating seed or millet! He just seems to like pecking everything.

So a question, is it bad for his health as I don't really want him to get ill?

Thanks :budgie:

I love the name! thats too cute, do they make Ridlin for budgies??? lol

I am not sure about the paper part, is he actually eating it? i have read many times that people see their birds "eating" paper/napkins etc., but they are actually nibblin it, rolling it around their toung and dropping it.

as for the poo, yeah, unfortunatly they do that! as for the soil, try to have him not do that. put pebbles on top of the soil if you can. a lot of potting soil has spores and other nasty things in it, you certanly dont want him eating that!

i hope this helps!

I would wonder if your bird is getting a proper diet?? Sometimes animals look to other things if they are missing some thing in their diet. Make sure they get seed and fresh veggies as often as possible. Is Freddie actually eating these things, or just exploring with his beak?? If it's exploring I wouldn't worry. Make sure he's not really eating it.

I don't actually think he is eating it. He spit's most of it out onto my bed, so I think he is just playing with it. I am still a bit scared that he may eat a bit though.

Will him destroying and nibbling his poo be bad for him? If I ate my own poo, then I would probably get sick, I am not sure about budgies though, they are strange little things! I am not sure whether he actually eat's the poo either, he just seem's to mash it up, but seeing as the poo goes in his mouth anyway to do that...yuck!

As for the soil, I have moved the plant put and he has not found it yet :p!

Freddie is definitely getting a correct diet in my eyes. Trill is on the menu everyday for him, and millet as a treat! We offer him other thing's occassionally (like lettuce), but unlike our previous bird's he has not really taken to that yet.

Freddie does seem to love exploring with his beak though, I think this is because he is a baby! I hope he grows out of this though, as if I went around our house licking everything I see, I am bound to pick up a few germs.

:)

I would put some rocks or fine gravel over the soil in the potted plants so he can't get to the dirt. As for the poo, well, I don't know other than keeping it cleaned up as much as possible. They sure do like to explore!

Thanks!

He is probably the most eccentric budgie we have had, by far.

Hey there,

My Oscar who is now just over ten months eats or tries to eat everything and anything in sight. Coffee cups or left over dinner aren't safe to be around cause if he can eat or drink it he will. My vet told me not to worry so much about him eating all the time because their natually curious and scratching around is what they do in the wild. I have shell grit on the bottom of Oscar's cage and quite often I will hear him scratching around making a good old mess on the floor. On the otherhand my budgie before Oscar never really chewed on many things apart from my hair or paper so I guess it just depends on the bird. Just make sure if he does chew paper that he's only eating the parts that doesn't have ink on it.

Hope everything goes well.

Love
Jess & Oscar
