View Full Version : Red mites?
I've been reading up again on different mites & had a look at 'red mites'.
I have a horrible feeling that Sunnie's & Skittles cage has them as I've noticed a few brownish patches in the corners of their cage. Today I did a complete overhaul of the cage & disinfected everything & threw away a few toys that had been in there a while but I don't think that killed them. Any advice to what else I could do?

Supplies like anti-mite spray or powder don't really exist here in Cyprus. Is there really no other way to get rid of them?

If you can obtain Eucalyptus Oil in Cyprus you can disinfect the cage with that mixed in with water. Won't mix very well because it's oil and water but you could try using a small amount of milk in the water as that will emulsify (mix the oil with the water) and then wash the cage again with Vinegar and Water solution. Even a few drops of Eucalyptus oil on a tissue or piece of cloth and wipe over the cage. You can also do the same thing with your birds just a small amount of the oil on a cloth and wipe it over the bird. Red Mite do not like Eucalyptus oil and it is perfectly safe for your birds as in the wild they nest in eucalyptus trees and also eat the leaves and chew the bark. You won't need very much. It is also a good disinfectant.
I use eucalyptus mulch in the birds nest boxes. And also put a couple of drops of oil in as well.

Thank you so much Kate! I will look for that as soon as I can. I'm sure they'll have it somewhere here. :)
