View Full Version : Budgie "gout"
:( Hi, this is Idee back from shoulder surgery 3 months and getting better. Meanwhile, while recovering I noticed that Byrdie's :budgie: little habits had changed alot. He was not as chipper as before. He couldn't balance. I had taken him to a "vet" who told me it was bumblefoot but now he had what looked like whiteheads on his feet. They were soft to the touch but hot. So I went back to the "vet" and asked for a specialist and went to Dr. Backus a bird vet. He told me Byrdie had gout and changed his diet to mostly fruits and wheat and gave me 2 medications to administer to him and spray to help with the pain. This was 1 month ago and since then I have seen a bit of a change. He's chirping, flying and learned to land on a broader surface than his perches, which I had purchased a sleeping nest for him and put sticks in it so it lay broad and flat more comfortable for him to sit on. He still has is perches and uses them but this is better. 9 years old and still going strong.
Has anyone else had or have a problem with "gout" and their parakeet. Would love to hear from you.
Thanks so much. Idee:budgie:

Hi Idee!:D Its good to see you here again and I'm glad your shoulder is getting better. I was just thinking of you the other day...wondering how your surgery went and how you and Birdie are doing.
I'm sorry Birdie has developed gout. I have no experience with it though so I can't be of much help.:(
Hopefully someone who an help will be by soon.

hi, dont have much experience with gout in birds but have suffered from it myself for over 10yrs and its very painful. Basically its the build up of uric acid due to reduced effeciency of the kidneys, which can result in 2 types of gout articular which forms crystals of uric acid around joints and visceral which forms on internal organs . Do you know which type your bird has? Sadly birds with visceral do not survive long but if its articular then research shows they can live for a few years with medication and the right diet.

I hope you're recovering well, and too bad about Byrdie. Bird gout is attributed to avian kidney disease. Much like kidney disease in man. It can become quite complicated. As long as he's seeing an avian vet lets hope all goes good for Byrdie.
