Hi,
I'm Leigh, in Minnesota.
For 2 months, I've had 4 young budgies in a small aviary...the green pair is 5 months old (Viv and Bill), the dark blue pair is 6 months (Lucy and Desi). I suspect that they may not get finger tame, living in an aviary, and all. But, I sit next to it every day, and talk to them. They come close to me, and sing and chatter. They play hard, eat everything offered to them, (mixed seed, millet spray, pellets, fruit, veggies, grasses), and seem to be doing very well. Eventually, I'll try to approach them with a perch, and see if they'll step up.
I'm learning alot from the posts here.
Thanks for this great site!
Leigh

Welcome Leigh! We're so happy you joined. I can't wait to see pictures of your budgies! Don't hesitate to ask any questions or respond to others'.

How big is your aviary? I have always wondered what that would be like to have one. It's great that your budgies eat such a varied diet! Great job!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've looked at photos of your budge friends...they are very sweet. :budgie: :) I'll put some in soon.
What I call an aviary is a big cage (5' x 5' x 3') given to me by a friend who made it. The lil ones seem to love it though. They sure play hard on all their swings, toys and (safe) branches.
I'm amazed at their diet, too! I've just slowly added all those things to their big cage. One will get curious and go over to nibble, then the others do, too...I've had to put 2 small cups of each food in, 'cuz they argue over it...hehe. I only put in fresh foods in the evening, alternating fruit and veggies each day.
I'm learning a lot here...Thanks again! Leigh

That sounds like an awesome set up! It sounds like they love it in there!! I can't get my budgies to go near swings but I wish they would.

Like you, I have also found that when I put some new food out, chances are that one of my little budgiekins will check it out. The others aren't too far behind so they too will check out the new munchies. Soon they are all eating it as part of their regular diets. I guess that's one advantage of being part of a flock; they see, then they do!

Agreed...
By the way...I'm glad dear Skyla is healing well, and adapting.
I'm sure she is a very sweet soul.

Thanks a lot Leigh. Skyla is doing well and I am happy with how well she is doing. It was a very stressful time, but we are moving on and are hoping for a long and healthy life for her. (She's only about 2 and a half years old now).

Welcome aboard. That is a nice size cage for four birds.

To try to tame them, slowly simply put your hand in the cage. Let is rest there without trying to coax the bird(s) onto your fingers. If you do this often enough, they will become used to it being there. Then, with a lot of patience, you will be able to slowly move your hand near them and, hopefully, they will eventually even let you touch them and, possibly, sit on your fingers.

It is hard when you have more than one to work on. If you do eventually breed your birds, you'll find that by handling the babies almost from birth, they will be very tame and such a pleasure to work with.

Again, welcome to the group. I know you'll enjoy it.

Tom

Thanks very much for the kind welcomes.

(I've been playing with my new camera...unfortunately the budgies aren't tame, so I can't get great photos of them playing outside their cage yet...hopefully someday)

I can identify with not having tame budgies. None of mine is super tame, but if they are in the mood, they will cooperate and do some step-ups. I don't mind though. I still love them to smithereeens!!
