View Full Version : Water Bottles
I wanted to try to teach my birds to drink from water bottles. Can I use hamster water bottles or do I need a kind specificly made for birds?
And if I keep their water-ers (or whatever they're called) and water bowls in their cages will they drink out of the water bottle too or just ignore it?
Do some budgies not like water bottles?

I had no idea that birds could drink from hamster water bottles! That is so cool!! I'll have to invest as all my bottles are currently in use and I wouldn't want to use them on birds anyways...

You can use the hampster ones, but you'll find that they waste a lot of water considering that they don't drink that much (and you have to change them daily/every other day). Cliff told me that Petco has some great tiny ones.

I LOVE Bird Butler water bottles. http://www.birdsetc.com/birdbutler.htm
The brass nib unscrews from the tube for cleaning and you can unscrew the brass nib to take it apart for cleaning. Also if/when the brass nib gets old and stops working you can replace just that part.
Hamster/rat water bottles usually have roller ball stoppers. Since these do not come totally apart getting a through cleaning is not possible.

Try removing just the stainless steel tube with ball inside, and run it through the dishwasher. You can also use a pipe cleaner to clean inside the tube around the ball, if you can.

This is probably less of a problem with budgies, but remember to be diligent in checking the water bottles.
Sometimes birds stuff pellets or toys in the "faucet" and can't get the water! Also, glass bottles are better because it something puncture the plastic the water can drain out when your gone leaving your bird with no water.

So I want my budgies to use a water bottle. I have one in the cage along with the normal water bowl. I was wondering if anyone knew the best way to get them all to use the bottle so I can remove the bowl without worrying they will go thirsty.
