Hi, I'm new here and my dad found this budgie while he was driving down the street. He said the budgie flew into his car, and luckily it wasn't hurt. We took it home, gave it my old budgie's birdcage (may he rest in peace) and it seems to be pretty settled in.

I suspected something was not right with his beak the first day he came home, but I thought maybe we should give it a couple days. It's been almost a week, no one has come forward to take this budgie, so I think I will keep it. I would take it to a vet, but I haven't found a doctor who's familiar with birds in my area (recently moved here). My dog's vet will only treat dogs and cats, so I had no luck with him.

Its beak is kinda white-ish in colour on the bottom right side. It's a bit difficult to describe to I've included a picture. The picture isn't the greatest, because the bird was totally freaking out when it saw the camera.

If it is scaly mite, what should I do to treat it?

I think this budgie's beak is just peeling like budgie's beaks usually do. But dont listen to me cos im not sure...anyone else help Aeternal? :S
It probs flew out of it's owner's window by mistake or something, thank god you took it in!

looks like a normal beak to me...he just needs lots of chew toys and a variety of perche to help keep his beak maintained. They can look like taht when they're peeling layers. It's normal.

congrats on your find!

Thanks for the replies...

Also, I'm just assuming this bird's a male...it's been a while since I last had a budgie...

Thank god my old budgie never had scaly mites

I think his beak looks normal. However keep up the search for a bird vet, just so you will know where one is.

Oh my! That's quite a story!! I'm glad you took the little sweety in and are going to care for the little fellow. I agree with the others...the beak does look like it is just peeling like beaks normally do. If your budgie had mites, the beak would have a crusty material on it that has a honeycomb-like appearance.

If you are looking for an avian vet, have you tried searching for one here?:

Please keep us updated!! ;)

i cant really see the eyes, but if they dont possess the white iris ring, your budgie i would say is a recessive pied and therefore the pink cere would make it a male. however, if you see a white iris ring, chances are good, the little one is female. the beak looks normal from the picture :) but a vet checkup couldnt hurt

we have no idea how old Ike is so I'm not sure if he would have an iris ring... and we're going on the basis that he's a male....

i cant imagine yoru budgie to be that young. the cere coloring has come fully in after all and the stripes on the head have moved back quite a bit. i dont see much of the spotting on the neck area though so if it just hasnt developed, then it may be younger than i think. hard to say. but good luck with him/her. a true beauty.

He looks fine to me he is a Recessive Pied and older over a year he is molting but he doesn't have no scaly mites definitely not...scaly face doesn't always affect the face it affects feet to but he is fine.Glad you found him are you going to try to find his owner or keep him?

Well we have posted signs...No one has come forward to claim him yet and it's been over a week....so we've pretty much decided to keep him unless an owner claims him soon

i agree, i beleive its just pealing a little. Most Budgie beaks will do this ^^ And i beleive its a little male, but i cant be to sure. Budgiekin gave a good linker to find an Avian vet. A check up couldn't hurt ^^ Plus, i looked at the two other ones you posted and He is a pretty little thing! i love his mutation colors!

What a lucky little budgie to fly into a sympathetic situation. If the owners don't come forward have you thought of a name for him?
