I have a mainly yellow with splottches of light green on her belly parakeet.
I named her Keebler! I've had her since the middle of July. Name derives from not knowing what to name her before I actually knew what sex she was but I wanted a neutral name to go either way for a male or female once I went to go pick her up from my parents place which they put her out side in 100+ degree weather everyday under the over hang of the house. Which had no walls or security other than hanging from the over hang. My parents let her cage get moldy....yuk!!!! Poor Keebler!! I am a better care taker than they are thankfully to Keebler.. anyway back to the main story...
I was eating a package of Peanut Butter Crackers by the little Keebler elves. Thats how her name came to be!! Now my question is, when I spend time with her and I get her on my finger, not out of the cage anymore, (we had a delima with flying full force into a mirror) first day out on that one. Broke the skin on her nose but no bleeding thank God!! very traumatized for a day and a half. She is better now though. When I talk to her on my finger and I say "Keebler...Keebler.." over and over. She moves her mouth and tongue but no noises or anything. It seems like maybe she is trying to say something but I am not sure. Now on the delima there is no way to put a sheet over the mirror the mirrors are actually 2 huge sliding doors that take up the whole wall basically. Now is it better to leave her towel over her cage in the morning to talk to her and teach her to talk or take it off? Any helpful answers will be appreciated.

My bird moves his mouth and tongue when I talk to him, too! I wonder if they're trying, they just can't get the sounds out yet? *shrugs*

By all means, take it off. If you want to have Keebler out of the cage but afraid she will get hurt flying, you can always clip the wings. They can't get a lot of speed going and just sort of flutter to the ground. She won't be able to fly into the mirror that way.

Star does this. But I also read somewhere that this can be a sign of stress? I'm not sure, but I highly doubt this in your case since it's when you talk to her. Star only does it when I talk to her. I really hope my baby will talk soon, she has been trying for nearly a year.

What type of sounds do budgies make when they are trying to talk? I know they say it's a different sound. Yesterday Sky was chirping, all the while I was saying "Pretty Birdie" then, it sounded as though he cleared his throught, made a few sounds from there, I know he didn't actually "clear it", and made the sound of "Pretty Birid" without actually sounding out the letters.. is this a sign that he is trying, or am I just wanting him to talk really bad? It wasn't a chirpy sound though, that's why I was thinking maybe he is actually trying. LOL.

do not give your bird any merrors or toys like a bird or an animal because its going to bond with it and not you and your bird is likely saying i love you in a way it thinks you would know mine dose it to and ushuley its just yawning
