View Full Version : Is this normal?
Ok this isn't really to do with health, but figured it would be best here... Well when we first got our budgies, Lou had a brown beak, which made us think he was a girl (no his name wasn't Lou then it was Lu-Lu lol), then the cere turned blue again then brown (but this time only for a short period) and is now blue again, this also happened to bobby, but it has been blue for quite a while now, and only recently it has turned brownish, (still a bit of blue there). Anyway i just wondered if this is normal :S

i would say, its safe to say, if it changes its a girl. the boys will go a deep blue and not really change unless their is something wrong with them.

Females sometimes have a whitish cere with a bluish undercast. Bea posted some pictures somewhere on this site to help with gender determination, but the best hint is if when the cere is blue there is a white ring around the nostrils. The males have a lighter color ring, but that ring is white in females.
Edit: The post by Bea is under Breeding and is a sticky.

I forgot where or who might of told me this, CORRECT me if I'm wrong. When there cere turns brown/tan they are fertile or ready to go if you no what I mean. My two females that are for sure females do the same thing. In other words when there cere is brownish there ready to go! Make babies!

Well depends what age they are, for younge birds it is normal. If they are fully mature and this is happening, as channon says it may because they are in breeding season or in a breeding stage. Also shannon a birds egg cant be fertile unless the male passes his sperm into the female. Even thought, if this has happened i would be happy :) :) :)
