View Full Version : Broken beak
Does anyone have any suggestion?
My budgie appears to have bashed her beak a few times recently by flying into the cage and has now got a pink cyst like mass on the bottom left of her cere/top of left hand side of the beak as well as having lots of black marks on the left side of her beak. The beak has recently started to over grow and she has been to the vets and had it cut twice over the past month or so, its growing at such a rate it needs cutting every 2 weeks. The vet said she has broken her beak (left side only), but she is now having great difficulty eating and there hasnt been any improvement in the beak. Any ideas what the problem cyst like mass is and how to help her?
o.o i wouldnt know.... my first thought was mites, but if the vet didnt even say that it was.... then i wouldn't know.... Do you have any pictures you could show us or anything? that may be helpful
My Billy cracked his beak, the vet gave me some intrasite gel to heal the crack.
Other than that I really can't suggest anything.. but you could try another vet.

i'm a little surprised the vet didnt do more to fix the cyst. i would think they would have given you some type of cream to apply. as for the beak, like amy said.
these are the best pictures of her beak that i cud find. We took her to a vet initially and he cut her beak but made it bleed, which cant have helped the situation, and the second vet just cut it back a bit. Neither really told us of anything we could do other than keep an eye on her. Im just getting a bit concerned about the fact that she cant really eat properly.

Your poor sweety! OMG! I was doing some reading on beak deformities and it doesn't look like there is a whole lot that can be done other than regular beak trimming. Some beak deformities can be remedied by trimming the overgrown mandible to the appropriate length which restores the normal "contact zones" and thus normal growth of the beak.
As far as the cyst, I am surprised the vet didn't do more to treat that. I don't know enough about this area to give you any insight. Has your budgie been seen by an AVIAN vet? (One that specializes in birds?)
no i havent seen an avian vet, i think there is one about 30mins drive away but both my birds hate being in the car even when covered. might try and book an appointment next week.
WOW!Thats such a beautiful budgie to have a beak like that!My cockatiel broke the tip of its beak off because it flew into the wall and didn't eat for 2 days but shes fine now its already starting to grow back...maybe in a week if she/he isn't eating...I don't think she/he will make it that is a bad infection (did the vet you seen before prescribe antibiotics) to stop infection?
Definitely see an avian vet!! Most vets that are not avian vets know only the most minimal about birds, unless they happen to own birds themselves.
o My!! o.o its a shame such a beautiful budgie has to deal with this D: but like Budgiekin says, i dont think much else can be done but to keep it trimed... the poor dear....
Also, like everyone else, im surprised they didnt do more, i suggest too that you try and find an Avian vet to take her too.

Oh... poor budgie:( ! I'm not sure, try taking her to an avian vet! This has never happened to my birds!
ooo thats so sad!! it looks so sore, I hope you can make an appointment to see an avian vet, I feel so sorry for both the bird and yourself.
Booked an appointment with an avian vet for later on this week, so hopefully they will be able to help her.

I sure hope that your avain vet will help your poor baby!:budgie:
Thank you for suggesting the avian vet, went yesterday and we have antibiotics for her and she had her beak clipped properly, hopefully in 2 weeks time when we go back to the vet she will be much better.

I'm so happy to hear that she is getting treated. Her beak sure looked`like it was infected....did the vet say specifically what the problem was? Is she able to eat better now that her beak is trimmed properly?
Keep us posted with her progress! Feel free to post some more pictures!!
