Hello my budgie lovin friends, As I stated in my Intro, Rico, my 6 year old budgie has a tumor. I have taken him to the vet and he said the must humane thing to do would be to put him to rest. I couldn't bare with taking that decision then so I opted for medication. I took him to the vet last Thursday (04/10/08) and his condition has not improved. In fact I think he's a bit more swollen. He has shallow breathing and his poops stick to his feathers because of the swelling in his belly. He hardly talks anymore and spends most of the day sleeping. However he still eats and preens himself and when I see such behaviors I get hopeful and can't find the strength to lay him to eternal rest. I really hate that this is happening to him. I can't avoid the statistics either. I guess he has reached a mature age and I know from previous visits to the vet that he had a fatty liver and was anemic :-( I took him in for an overgrown beak and nails which are signs of a fatty liver. I really have enjoyed life with Rico and will miss him terribly but I feel putting him to sleep is in fact the best thing to do for him. I don't want him to be poked and stressed out any further.
I hope I'm doing the right thing... I plan on taking him in tomorrow afternoon to say goodbye...but I might chicken out.

It is a tough decision, but I am sure you will make the decision that is in his best interest. Let us know what happened.

So sorry about Rico
I personally would like to have the last moments with him, rather than putting him to sleep
hope you make the best decision that suites you

I'd give apple cider vinegar a try. At this point it's worth a try and I can personally say it greatly reduced a fatty tumor in my Stormy. http://talkbudgies.com/showthread.php?t=10710&highlight=stormy+apple ..Either way, it's your choice. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

oh my goodness! I just read the thread. That's amazing. I'll have to try it ASAP. And i'm going to experiment with putting a drop in their water as well. Maybe that'll prevent Spazie from developing one. I think I'll go home for lunch and give it to him. I'll taste it first though. Thank you so much for sharing. God, I hope I can post pics of a miracle like Stormy's!

You're welcome and I really hope it helps like it did with mine. Just a small note -when giving the drop the vinegar is already at 5% acidity, dilute with two drops of water. I use acv in their water on a regular basis as it helps prevent bacteria, helps their digestive system and even their feathers. It works much like a preventative for alot of issues. Best of luck!!! If you need anything let me know.

uh-oh. Well, I tried a full teaspoon myself and I thought, whoa that's burning my esophagus. So I diluted the solution with a bit of water. I tasted that mix and it was still pretty intense. BUt I said, what the heck, it's vinegar not poison. SO I gave him a drop! I observed him for about 40 minutes and he looked ok. He ate and preened himself and went back to sleep. Well, Next time I'll do the two parts water one part ACV. How often did you administer the mix? Once a day? I still feel the vinegar in my throat, it must have burned off some of my own toxins!

Poor little Rico. With any luck the vinegar mix might help him a little. I've never had to go though this before, but I'm sure it's horrible. At least you can spend time with him and he can keep comfortable and warm with you.
Best of luck to you both.

Nikki also has a tumor between her legs that the vet pulled some liquid out of to test it, but he saw nothing and said, no, she doesn't have a long time to live, but he didn't suggest putting her down. I've just let her live her normal life. It's not a fatty tumor (I figured it was, she has been overweight her entire life), he said it was probably an ovarian or liver cancer. She pulled the feathers away from her bottom so her poops don't stick to them.
Good luck with your baby, it's always hard, especially when they seem so normal some times and then other times seem alot different.
