any tips for building a gym?

sounds good to me. saw one the other day at a pet shop, it had ladder's rope with large bricks and colourfull beeds. But would'nt know how to make one even though i did woodwork at school. Oh yes becareful which glue you use.:)

ok we started! we are very proud of it... even though it is not finished!

it has birch branches nailed into a wood board and we are hoping to add toys at another end and hanging off the branches

My suggestions:

Stay away from Wood glue

Use Natural Wood Branches, and stay away from the branches described here:
