Well, as most of you know my original plan was to breed Toby and Nanari but when they were unsuccessful I had to get Toby a new mate. Violet then joined us. I put Nanari with Barty and they got on very well. After the quarantine was over for Violet she was introduced to Toby and they got on very well too. Soon after, Nanari died. Barty was very upset. After a couple of months there was absolutley no success with Toby and Violet so I decided to give Toby a break and let Barty pair up with Violet. We got a new cage to breed them both in (it's like they are living in a mansion now ) and thats all up to now. Violet had been going into the nesting box latley and I am expecting eggs to arrive soon but I'm not getting my hopes up .

Congrats, sounds like someones going to be a grandpa. Isn't love strange? You'll never know when it'll stirke. I was watching 60 minutes last night and saw a story on a woman having a family with her father!!!

I saw that too!.Not on 60 minutes but on the news... . They are spending more time near the nesting box and I think I even saw Violet go inside :D..

YAY! Violet was in the nesting box for a long time this morning and she is STILL in there :D. She may even have an egg but when I went in to top up the seed I looked into the box but Violet went into defensive mode and I couldnt see anything, I will check when I have the chance. Barty also looks like he is defending the nest :)..

Today was very rainy so hopefully that will help with the breeding process (as I have read on lots of websites). Violet has once again spent most of her day in the nesting box of her choice and she seems to be very snug in her new cage. When I checked in the box today (while changing thier water) I saw that the pine shavings had been moved around quite a bit to the sides so there is a lot of activity happening there. Also Violet hasn't been kicking the shavings out of the box, maybe she dosen't like that type of thing? :p..

More of the same stuff today, except Violet wasn't in the nesting box as much as usual, but to make up for that I saw them mating, but then they fell off the perch :p. So hopefully some eggs soon :)!..

Thankyou :). Unfortunatley there had been little progress. The same routine has been happening day after day. If anything Violet has been going into the nesting box less! This may not be the case though as I havent been keeping a very close eye on them but from what I have seen they havent made much progress at all. Hoping for eggs soon :)..

Hi Brown, I have been reading your breedig journal ,
I've noticed that you have been checking everyday ,
Why don't you let them have a rest for a few days, I know that with my breeders when I first started that they were more concerened that I was harrassing them , rather then Breeding ....
Just a little food for thought ... Good luckI hope you have plenty of fertile eggs soon ..... You will have some more nice rec pieds :D
Brown9944
04-22-2008, 12:24 AM
Thankyou...that was the next question I was going to ask "will the babies be rec pied" but you answered it before I asked lol :). I check on them every 3 days, most of my observations are from when I am outside looking into the cage without going in. But still no signs of eggs in the box...yet :(..

Ok got them. I know it looks very convincing but Violet isn't sitting on eggs...that I know of lol. I am not 100% sure but she has been in that nesting box all day. Also, there are shavings in the box but Violet has pushed them all to the side :).

wow thats an avairy lol.......
hey might i suggest that you add some more branches and maybe some gumleaves??
Brown9944
04-22-2008, 02:13 AM
Yeah, it is pretty big for just two birds lol. I was going to add some more perches and it is a relitavley new cage. How would I put them in though??? three of the sides are made of just metal with nothing to hold perches :S.
Squeak_Crumble
04-22-2008, 02:17 AM
we fistly you make one side really pointy( and no your not killing the bird lol) and drill a hole in one side.... the you put the other end in the wire bit... also maybe a pot with branches on it with leaves.... my birds love that lol. Were about in SA do you live???? just asking lol.
Ill try get some picts of my avairy.....
prettybird1212
04-22-2008, 02:32 AM
big aviary... If you check her vent daily, a day before she is going to lay eggs the vent will be very swollen. as she has been in the box all day, now would be a good time to start checking.
for perches. drill a hole in the cage where you want the perch. then drill a hole in the end of the perch. then get an eyelet, push the long end into the hole and then tighten it. Or you can get an topless scre w and put into the branch- then get a wing nut and tighten onto the end of the *****.

Lol!
ANYWAY back on topic, still nothing really. I hope they will get a move on after the weekend because apparently we are going to have a lot of rain so hopefully that will convince them..
prettybird1212
04-23-2008, 01:51 AM
yeah, its been raining alot here too. This is cloud and dollars first clutch and cloud has already laid 5 eggs and as far as I know they are fertile except the first one wich got broken. Shes just like her mom- lays plenty of fertile eggies... oooppps- we get distracted to easily. :p

Lol it's ok to be off topic a bit here...I was just joking :p
Brown9944
04-25-2008, 10:01 PM
Well...there is still little progress...as in LITTLE EGG!. I looked into the nesting boz, expecting nothing and there was a little oval shaped white object...AN EGG! :D. Will post pictures soon...but computers aren't working properly at the moment so I will when they are...always times like this computers fail lol ..
Brown9944
04-26-2008, 02:24 AM
Sorry, looks like pictures are far off because the computer is REALLY not co-operating lol sorry. Anyway, Violet has been sitting on the egg nearly all day and just coming out for the occasinal poop lol :D..
Brown9944
04-26-2008, 02:57 AM
Sorry about this but I have a question. It is very stormy cold and windy at the moment and it will be like this for about 3 days...will the eggs be okay?.
prettybird1212
04-26-2008, 12:37 PM
yeah, we've been having similar weather and our eggs are still fine,
Brown9944
04-26-2008, 10:08 PM
Some bad news... Violet didn't sit on the egg last night and when I checked this morning she had cracked it open. It may have been infertile but I can't be sure. But hopefully she hasn't finished laying yet so she can lay more just as the weather gets better. Also, I think she may have layed her first egg off of the perch because I found a broken egg on the ground. But as I said before hopefully she hasn't finished laying yet. :(.
Budgietom
04-26-2008, 10:10 PM
She will lay more. It is unlikely she will only have a clutch of one egg. Get ready for the new eggs.
Brown9944
04-26-2008, 11:09 PM
I hope so...and I hope the weather gets warmer for her too. We just had some hail!. She did lay two eggs but I think she layed one off the perch so hopefully she will lay one more tommorow as that is when she is due for another one, I just hope she lays it in the nesting box and the weather is warm... .

hey, I have just read your thread and it sounds quiet promising. My main suggestion is one that I hope you dont take the wrong way, I know that it can be the most eggciting time when our birds breed and we all have a tendency to get over zellous about this! You have said previously that she was spending less time in the box before she laid which seems to make me think that you have a bird similar to my lilly. she laid the first egg in the box fine but the second she laid off the perch because I stuck my big nose in here territory before she was completely comfortable with me as her new owner. She stopped laying after the second for three weeks, which was time that I spent bonding with her, then out off the blue she laid again 1st in the box second on the floor, I left it at that thinking she would stop again, but I noticed she started again three days later when I hadnt even looked at the nest, I didnt look again for another two weeks and she continued to sit and lay in the box! she popped out this afternoon so I popped in to see what she was up to very quickly and look at that she has five eggs all okay! I gave her a treat of millet spray then left it at that!
So basically what I am saying is, she hates me in her nest and would rather detroy it than have me in it at the moment! I have always watched to make sure that when she is out she isnt showing signs of eggbinding and the like and as long as she is being feed and looks healthy I will have to wait for the final result. Let the lady be, avoid opening the nest box more that once aweek, your cage is quiet large so do as I do, take a book and sit in the avairy and read for awhile, Lilly wont come near me but all the others are more than happy to pop on down and see what treats I have in mu pockets and she is coming to terms with me just being there!
Brown9944
05-01-2008, 04:29 AM
Well, I was hoping that she would lay more but the weather has been terrible, very VERY cold and he hasn't layed any more eggs. I only checked on them twice. She is spending a lot of time near the other nesting box now so hopefully when the weather gets a bit better the eggs will arrive :)..

Awwww! That's good to hear! My horse's name is Barty, too, LOL. I love him to bits....*grins*
My suggestion is that Violet may be upset, as suggested earlier, by your "attentions" to her nest. Try and "tone it down" a bit. Don't worry, birds have been doing this for centuries, and she can handle things. Wait a little while, (maybe a week?), until she's out of the box for some food, and then take a look. I know you're curious, I would be, too! Just don't get too anxious...all things come in time.

07-06-2008, 08:32 PM
Ok, I have taken all of your advice and have left them alone for a long time. Violet had been spending a lot of her time in the box this past week so when I checked in there this morning there were two eggs :D. One problem though...it's the middle of winter here, it's been very cold and rainy so I don't know what influenced her and Barty to breed, there could be a possibility that the eggs are infertile... . Whoops, forgot to add that she has been sitting on them nearly all day, except when I see her come out to eat something and she is sitting on them at night too which she wasn't doing with the last ones which I am beginning to think were infertile..

I am happy to say that I have not seen much of Violet at all since she has been sitting on the eggs all day and all night (coming out to take the occasinal poop of course!). The grand total number of eggs is 2, although I found a discarded egg at the bottom of the cage (amazingly un-harmed but as cold as ice) and so washed it and candled it. As I had expected, the egg was infertile. That was about 5 days ago so obviously it hasn't affected Violet's parenting skills :P. Also, she has kicked out all of the wood shavings in there and she chose the nest box with no conclave and I am very worried that the chicks might develop splayed legs... how do I stop this?. But, all is going well and hopefully the chicks can brave the winter and grow into fully fledged budgies with no major complications :D..

07-17-2008, 07:44 AM
Nice.I STRONGLY suggest you take the eggs out and boil them or something. The winter here is just to much. I lost 2 of my latest clutch when it only just started and they were one and a half MONTHS old. To save you dissapoint meant i again STRONGLY suggest you stop them mating and breeding. Chicks just born arnt going to suirvive the winter
Brown9944
07-17-2008, 07:55 AM
Oh...:( take them out and boil them? but won't that just make Violet lay more??? I can't face boiling eggs... but if it has to come to that, it's what I'll do, can't I just give them a chance, is there a chance they will survive? :(.
Squeak_Crumble
07-17-2008, 08:00 AM
I'm sorry to say but in this weather there is a %5 percent if less of a chance they will survive. Take out the boxes and if she lays more boil them and put them back so she just sits on them and eventually grows bored. I'm really sorry to say it but you just cant breed in winter. I had 5 bubs born and then 1 died at a wk old of coldness and that was in March and then after a bit chick 4 died and then 3 hung on for a bit and then died. Lucky(as i dibbed no 2) Had a broken leg and a %10 percent chance of survivng and Luckily(hence his name) he survived. He is still underwieght and that was 1-2 weeks ago. I VERY VERY VERY STRONGLY suggest not to breed at this time of year
Brown9944
07-17-2008, 08:04 AM
I can't face it, if i boil the eggs because i dont THINK that they will survive it feels to me like I'm murdering them...please, please don't think badly of me for this but I will give her a go, it has been getting sunny here and not as cold. There is a chance they can survive right?. I repect what you are saying but by no means would I put my birds through any pain...but I can't face it...I'm really sorry but if the weather does get too severe then I will take your advice before it's too late...
Brown9944
07-17-2008, 08:05 AM
Please, please I don't want to start a rant or anything over this, I am willing to take advice... :'(.
Squeak_Crumble
07-17-2008, 08:09 AM
But there is expected hailing soon. I'm lucky my chicks survied and they were 1 and a half MONTHS old not a newborn. If you feel like your murdering the chicks i know what it feels like. But would you rather them be born and actually live then die of numbing coldness hardly 30mins if that after there born. Violet and Barty coudnlt make them warmer and eventually they would die.... There is even more of a lesser chance if only 1 bird sits on the nest. and like you said even violet came out for that 5 min rest and in those 5 mins it WOULD die...:(
Brown9944
07-17-2008, 08:14 AM
Ok, please don't get angry at me for this, but I will give them a chance and if unsucessful I SWEAR I will take the nesting boxes out and give it a rest for a year. It's colder up in the hills than it is here but still its pretty cold...I really hope that you don't think less of me please don't get angry but I feel that even if there is the smallest bit of hope there is no reason to kill them. As you said, your Lucky lived but I think it's better to give them a fighting chance and as I said, I SWEAR I only want whats best for my birds and if it goes wrong I will stop breeding for a year or maybe for good, it has been very stressful.

Ok then. I just dont want you hurt like what happened to me. I was so upset that i lost more then half the clutch and that one was only just hanging on to life.

Ok guys just wanted to let you know this is from up to 5 months ago
marc has another thread somewere of Violet and Barty.
I will try and find it for you. They ended up having Ryu, a normal blue male or a normal violet male there has been alot of debating on it.
I will just try and find it for you guys!
Brown9944
12-14-2008, 04:29 AM
Lol thanks Sophie...I was just about to say the same thing.
Violet and Barty did end up successfully raising their first chick, named Ryu.
He is a normal violet male.
The journal for that one is called "Violet and Barty II":)
