Quarantine Explained.

Before adding a new bird with old ones you must first quarantine the new one.
Basically this means to have the new one in a separate cage, in another room for about 30-45 days, if she/he seems well, you can place the 2 cages next to eachother. Keep them like this for a further 10-20 days to see if they get along. If they do, have them out of their cages to let them play together.
Then you may house the budgies together if all is going well.

It is vital to do this because if the new bird is carrying a disease or illness the other may catch it and not make it.
Whilst Quarantining, you may want to use this time to tame the new bird.

Remember if your birds do not get on, remove the new bird immediately. House them next to eachother like before.

If the new bird does have something wrong with it during the Quarantine, Contact an Avian vet ASAP.

If when your birds are together, or close and one gets ill you must remove the healthy one into another cage, in another room.
If you do this to the ill one, it will put more stress on the bird.

Remember, if any of your birds are ill, contact an avian vet as soon as you can to stop the risk of it spreading.

good job amy, but it should be 30 -45 days, instead of 20-30 days

No, 20-30 in another room, then another 10-20 next to eachother if both look healthy.

sorry i dissagree 100% with that, budgies can still not show signs of a problem after 30 days. 30 - 45 days alone then they can be introduced

People have their own way of doing things, your way is safer, it's just that I prefur doing things different. :)

PLEASE CHANGE THIS TO SHOW 30-45 DAYS IN SEPERATE ROOMS.... lets not put false info out there because you like to do things different ways.

thanks :)

Its one of those things that the petstores never tell you about. When i was in my teens and my sister had moved out & starting her own family, got a budgie. Decided to get a 2nd a few months later... within 3 months both were dead. She kicks herself everytime she thinks about it now.

The actual quarantine guidelines are 30-90 days. 90 being a full quarantine but most people prefer to do 30. :)

I'm like that too although i keep them in separate cages (with playtime together) for another month or two after quarantine anyway.

True, and an actual quarantine is in a totally seperate building, not just in another room. But in most family situations, its just not realistic!

However atleast i will know for now. wow i made lot of mistakes before. i feel bad now. anyway atleast i will know for when i get any more birds, i got 2 tiesl but ther from the same place..but diferent parents so i didnt have to quarintine.
