My 8 year old male budgie, Mitso, has had a strange problem intermittently over the last month.:S

First, in the beginning of March we noticed droppings that appeared to be bloody.
He was brought to a vet and after $159 in bloodwork there was no diagnosis!
He appeared healthy otherwise and is still very active. The bloody droppings ended in two days.

Today we just noticed similar large droppings that look like the color of grape jelly.

He has no fruit in his diet, and eats regular budgie seed. He hasn't chewed on anything while out of his cage in the last few days.

The problem is very frustrating to us as it was to the vet.

Has anyone had a similar problem and found the cause through a vet?

Thanks for your help!

I am no help but wanted to wish you luck on finding out what is wrong with him and that he's able to make a speedy recovery

I have never experienced this, but I would go back to the vet.

Could it possibly be something your bird is eating? A toy, colored seed, etc? Also I hope your budgie does get other foods besides seed? Does your budgie play like normal? Any other signs of illness? You could always find another avian vet if one can't help you another avian vet may be able to help diagnose your bird.

That is frustrating. I don't know the answer either. I would ask the vet to look at the lab results a little closer.

Chances are if you think it is blood, then it probably is. Blood in droppings is NEVER normal. All I know is that there are a few things that could cause blood in droppings (enteritis, septicemia, or poisoning for example). In any case, this needs to be investigated further. Had you seen an avian vet?

My budgie Apollo had a couple of large bloody droppings once. Then he went several months without anymore of them. Then one day he just started bleeding from his vent area so we brought him in to our avian vet immediately who tried to figure out what was wrong. Unfortunately, we did not find out, even after exploratory surgery. He was so weak at that point that he did not make it out of recovery following the surgery and even the necropsy results were inconclusive. He was six years old.

I am not telling you this story to scare you, however, if it is in fact blood, this likely is a serious issue. I wish I could tell you what could be wrong in your little sweety's case, but we never even found out about our budgie Apollo. :(

I hope your little guy is okay! Please keep us updated!
