View Full Version : Prolapse of the oviduct
I'm very concerned about my parakeet. We noticed a prolapsed oviduct two nights ago (didn't know what was wrong at the time) and rushed her to the vet. The vet eventually removed the egg but left the oviduct out, she is staying at the vet right now getting doses of antibiotics and moistening the tissue.
Why didn't the vet put the oviduct back in place?
What is going to happen the next time she tries to lay an egg?

The vet has to let the oviduct go back in by itself so it is placed correctly in the budgies body. This budgie may not be able to have anymore eggs. I'm sure your vet will let you know what to do if this happens again. The most imporatant issue is that you got your budgie to the vet in time. She could of died from this. Take Care and Keep us posted.

Your poor little budgie. :(
I am very surprised that the vet did not put the prolapsed oviduct back into place. Is your vet an avian vet?
Once a budgie has had a prolapsed oviduct, it would be wise to discourage further egg laying. When brooding (nesting) behaviour is noticed, removing anything in the cage that the hen is showing nesting instincts towards can help discourage it. Limiting daylight hours can also help.
I hope your little one is going to be okay. Prolapsed oviducts often have very unpredictable outcomes. My fingers are crossed that your sweety will make a full recovery. Please keep us posted. ;)
Yes, I believe he is an avian vet, but I didn't ask for credentials. We inherited her about a year ago and foolishly never found an avian vet for her. We were refered to this vet by the 24 hour animal hospital that we first took her to.

Hope she is doing well. I am really not an expert in this area, but I'll be thinking of you two!
Hugs. :budgie:

I had this happen to two of my budgies in the past. One, a 10 year old hen, survived. The other - sadly - did not.
The problem is if the vet puts the oviduct back in and sews up the opening, there could be a crisis if there is another egg. Budgies usually lay eggs 2 days apart. This is the danger. Maybe this is the reason that the vet is waiting.
I keep my fingers crossed...

I think I wold call the vet and ask why they didn't put the oviduct back in place. I hope all goes well for your baby.

yup, call your vet, but it very well could be he doesn't want any more eggs stuck so he is leaving it out of place until she finishes.
Day 5 and she's still with us, but far from out of the water. Her prolapse naturally went back in, but now there is so much swelling down there that she can't deficate well. She is barely eating, and she is puffed up all the time. Tonight the oviduct prolapsed again, though not nearly as bad. I tried hard to see another egg but I couldn't, I think it might be built up waste that caused it this time. Last time a big issue was that the tissue dried up, so this time I decided to lubricate the area with neosporin to keep it moist until I can get her to the vet in the morning. Thanks for all your support, and to any other newbies that happen to be reading this post, please make sure you feed your feathered friend a good diet, as the likely cause of this problem was malnutrition from an all seed diet.

I am so sorry about your budgie. I hope she'll be out of the danger zone soon and make a quick and speedy recovery.
