This is likely to be a dumb question, but, her goes anyway. If you are hoping for your budgies to breed would you equip the cage with lots of toys like always or have fewer so that the pair will pay more attention to each other? Also, what about mirrors in a cage with a pair you hope will breed? I ask because Sunny thinks she is the stuff, and sits on a little mirror toy almost exclusively. Of course, Sparky sits on the same toy directly in front of Sunny, and they spend a whole lot of time grooming each other and smooching. Whaddaya think?

Also, she occasionally goes into the nest box and chews at it a bit, but it's been there a few weeks and no little eggs yet. Is there any hope? Is this pre-nesting behavior?

yes, what you described is pre-nesting behavior. she wont mate unless its just to her liking. you could remove the toys, but if they are paying attention to each other as it is, it should be fine. they probably just like the mirror because they consider it another budgie in their flock. if she has just started investigating the nest box, its a good sign and you should expect mating to happen soon.

She has been checking it out for a couple of weeks now, but the chewing only started this week.
