Hey everyone Im Jess! I live in Saskatoon, Sk Canada. I just purchased my first budgie today. I think its a girl but im not entirely sure yet. (She) is a pale blue (ill add a pic later) Shes really scared right now. They birds at my local pet store are not handled so shes rather wild like. I havent chosen a name yet, I think I might use the name 'Bee'. Its short and cute, but my options are still open.
Does anyone have any cute names that are unique? Does anyone know any good training and tameing tricks? Id love to be able to hold her soon :)

Hi Jess! You are a fellow Canadian I see! Awesome. (I'm from Ontario). Welcome to the Talk Budgies forum. We are so happy you found us! I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do!

Congratulations on the purchase of your new little budgie! I am sure that after a couple of days, she will feel more at home and at ease.

Once she seems to be settling in better, you can start the taming process. When you put food in her cage, like yummy veggies and fresh seeds and pellets for example, make sure you move your hand in and out of the cage slowly so as not to frighten her. When you start noticing that she doesn't seem to be so scared of your hand going in and out, you can then start to introduce your index finger to her as a perch. For the first few days, you probably won't actually want to touch her with your finger, but rather simply hold it as close to her body as she seems comfortable with. Gradually, you can move your finger closer and closer to her body and eventually you will be touching her! I'd start with that and once she is able to do that without any signs of fear, then you can start getting her to do "step-ups".

I realize it's a bit early to start talking about "step-ups", but in case you are interested. . . . . you would press your finger gently on her lower abdomen (where her legs join with her body) in an upward/backward direction while and saying the command "step-up". If she doesn't move, just repeat the motion a few times. Then give her a break. You can try doing this two to three times a day for short periods of time (no longer than 10 minutes each). If she TRULY doesn't like your finger and won't let your finger near her, you can try using a short perch of some kind to do the step-ups instead of using your finger. I hope that information helps! Be sure to let us know how she is doing!

I like the name Bee for a name! It's so cute and I have not yet heard of a budgie with that name before. I can't wait to see pictures of her so be sure to post them for us to see! If you are looking for examples of other budgie names, there is a website that has an alphabetical listing of bird names people around the world have. There are HUNDREDS of names. You can find it at this link:

Hi and welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay. FYI: budgies love millet, but use sparingly. Great as a treat and to help you bond. Enjoy!!
