This baffled me? My friends budgie, Kio has red markings above his cere which look sore. The red has started appearing on his cere and is flakey. I thought it could be from the redish mineral block he is eating. He is eating and drinking well and is acting normal. He is molting at the minute though so maybe this is a reason?
Heres a pic of Kio. You can sort of see the red on his cere but it is obvious above it.

um it looks like blood? But it could be sick...because he could have snezzed that out and it looks like blood to me?:S
I don't think Budgies can throw up... The Photo isn't all that clear, but to me it does look like sore skin. Is it bald there? If so, he may have been rubbing it, hence the sore bit.
How long has it been like that?
No Amy she never said throw up..and really budgies sort of do throw up males feeding females? But anyways sore skin does not get that red?
That's called regurgitating. ;)
I think sore skin can go red like that if covered in blood.
Alfie, what I'd do is tell your friend to go to an avian vet and get him checked out, no matter what it is.

jay is going through a molt at the moment and the top of his sere is slightly red and dark there, but not that red. although it could just be the molt that is causing it, especially if there isnt a second bird to help preen and whatnot

Does this budgie have a rough perch that he scratches his cere on? If so, it is possible that he is scratching too hard and too much. Also, it may be that he is having some sort of discharge from his cere due to an illness of some sort.....hard to say until you bring the little sweety to a vet.....
And BTW, budgies can vomit.....if they are ill, they can throw up their stomach contents like we humans do.
Seeeee Amy... Thanks BudgieKin
Oh sorry! I think I might need to re-read Budgie diseses and illnesses! (Good book)

if too much head rubbing is the problem, he should get another budgie to help out. excessive head rubbing is usually only a problem in singlely kept budgies or budgies that dont get a head scratch from their owners ahhaa. good luck. i'll think positive and say the little guy is a-ok
