Hi! I would like all of you guys (and girls;)) input and your help with building my Aviary early this summer. I was trying to figure out how big it would have to be for four budgies (planning on getting two more this summer), and I came up with:

Length: 40"

Height: 30"

Depth: 24"
Would this be enough for 4 budgies or would I have to make it bigger?

I have a limited amount of space as my room is small
(about 14' by 10')... so I have restrictions, who doesn't?:p

My door jam is only 28" wide so I can't make anything bigger than 26" deep.

That sounds big enough fo 4 budgies. Space the perches out so that they get exercise and have room to fly.

That's more than enough space for four. Even six should work quite nicely. Send photos when you finish it. Building your own is almost as much fun as owning the birds.

Another question (Imagine that!), are Finches compatible with Budgies? Could they be housed together? Thanks again.

Personally, I wouldn't mix finches and budgies. Some finches are very aggressive but if it comes to a fight, I suspect the hook bills of the budgies would determine the winner.

A good friend of mine has a very large outdoor aviary ( probably 20 X 30 feet) and mixes budgies and finches and has several trees inside the aviary. He has had no trouble but the birds have enough space to avoid stressful encounters.

There is another thread, somewhere here, that addresses this same issue. Also, remember that there are so many different size finches. It MIGHT be OK to mix larger finches with budgies but I still wouldn't risk it.

No I've heard time after time, that budgies should only be kept with their own kind but I don't have first hand experience with finches so I'm not sure.
