View Full Version : Concerns about breeding...

My male & female budgies have just finished hatching & launching their first brood. I've separated the parents from the "youngsters" (now 6 weeks old) & retired the nesting box. Before we placed the nesting box in their cage, the male & female were clearly "just friends", & didn't begin the mating process until after the nesting box appeared. I had assumed that once the nesting box was removed, they would lose interest in mating again... but this doesn't appear to be the case! Should I be concerned that they are continuing to mate? Will the female try to lay more eggs on the floor of the cage? Is there anything I should do to intervene... or should I just let "nature take it's course"?

Sometimes taking out the nest box helps but not all the time. Some females will also lay eggs even if they have not mated. You have to be careful this because they can become eggs bound. When I take out the nest box for my pair the female will try finding a new place to lay her eggs, she gives up after about a week. Just keep a close watch on them. Last thing you want is the female to get egg bound.

i seperate too. if she lays more eggs before the babies are fully fledged, then i replace them with fake eggs, but i didnt have to do that this year. i just put mom back into the aviary and let dad take care of the kids, lol
