Hi Guys,
I have recently given a home to a lovely budgie we called "Bobby" The only trouble is he cannot fly for some reason, he pulls and chews at the feathers on one of his wings, also he has trouble with his droppings sticking to him and they clump together where i have to hold him and wipe them away, which he really doesnt like me doing. I gave him a home because the pet shop was going to destroy him as they said they could not sell a budgie that did not fly. Anyone got any ideas before i take him to the vets which i know he will not appreciate either.
thanks
Julie

Hi Julie. I don't know, but Bobby is really lucky you delivered him from that place!! He needs to see an avian vet asap. I'm sure it won't be any worse than how uncomfortable it must be for him right now! Oh, I'm Anna Belle, by the way, and welcome to the forums.:) We're very glad to have you here!! Good luck with your new budgie. Please let us know how he does.

Hello,

sticking droppings may be the sign of a diarrea or infection at the digestive system. You should take him to a vet, but don't worry, vet will make you bird healthy again :) but timing is important you should take care of it as quick as possible.

About chewing his feathers; maybe he might be in depression? depressed, bored or unhappy birds might do that and in many pet stores animals can get depressed even if the store is clean, healty etc. at the end it is a store and birds have no freedom there. or even he used to have a partner there but sold... we can't know that... you can try to make your budgie comfortable. Play some soft music that he can cheer, talk to him, be his friend . and observe his behavings. And vet can give some medicine for his feathers. keep us informed :)

if you just got bobby, i wouldn't overly worry too much at the moment. they need some time to adjust and irregular droppings is part of that adjustment. after a few days, the droppings should be normal again and shouldn't be a problem. as for it sticking, i wouldn't worry about cleaning it off if you don't want to stress out bobby. just place a small dish with water at the bottom of the cage. sooner or later, him jumping around will lead him to the water which should wash his behind off just fine. just keep an eye on him, and let him relax a bit. if things don't get better or if you are really worried, go to the vet immediately.

Vet ASAP!! Budgie's aren't really known as feather chewers...he may have never learned to fly to begin with, which is sad, all birds should be properly weaned and fledged. But it's possible he could just be a bird with some troubles...Your vet will better be able to diagnose though.

Let us know how it goes!

side note...when I first brought my current budgies home 2 years ago my male had issues with sticking poops...after i got both on a steady solid diet and gave them plenty of toys and interaction it cleared up after about a month...the vet did check before with test and found nothing disease wise, so we got busy with balancing diet and offering playtime toys, lots of mental stimulation. And in about a month both budgies were doing wonderfully! I think I was lucky, both my budgies will eat just about anything the first time.

but get thee to the vet!

the wing thing, i have no idea on, the vet should help with that

as for the sticky poos, mine to this day get that. new birds i get ususally get it from change in the diet, but the aviary ones get it when they eat too much fruit apple expecialy.

but when you take him to the vet for the wings, they can check to poo too, just to be safe!

good luck

well i would try cutting some of the feathers around the vent area...that always seems to be the trick !
